Replace BT Smart Hub 2 with Asus ZenWifi?

[link to this post]

I need to setup a MESH wifi in my house, and have settled on the (pricey) Asus ZenWifi AX, rather than BT's offering based on numerous reviews. I have BT fttp 300Mb/s.

Has anyone else done the same? If so, I have some questions:

- Should I continue to use the Smart Hub 2 with wifi disabled, and the first Asus wired to it?

- Or, is it better to dispense with the Hub and use the first Asus for wifi and DHCP router, and connect it instead to the modem?

- If I connect the Asus directly to the modem, do I need to configure it with a BT username and password, or any other configuration, for that matter?

You can remove the BT hub - provided you know the username and password which is visible in the user interface. When you connect the Asus you may find it take a few minutes to establish the link so do not be to hasty to think it is not working. I recently did some swapping between three BT hubs and had to wait a few minutes each time

Or put the hub into full bridge mode so it acts as an interface only and let the ASUS do everything.

Thanks @MHC. From what I can see from the config pages and from internet search there's no means for setting the Smart Hub 2 to full bridge mode.

From what I've read elsewhere, apparently all I need to do is disable the Hub's wi-fi and run the Asus in AP mode, with the first of the Asus nodes connected to one of the hubs LAN ports.

I will probably end up trying both methods of operation, though which is better I'm hoping to find out here.

On some SmartHub2's there is a hidden setting.

Can you access your hub, through Admin to Internet setting and post the URL you see?

There's no specific URL for internet setting, just this:

http://192.168.1.254/broadband.htm

This page has 3 tabs: Internet,VPN and Dynamic DNS

Possibly the wrong model or firmware, but try:

http://192.168.1.254/routing.htm

It may bring up a hidden page.

not the same but I have a Netgear Orbi Mesh connected to my new BT FTTP.

I've simply connected the orbi router in place of the BT hub - set up extremely simple just needed ISP set to PPPoE and Login [email protected]

I prefer this set up as there is one less device to power. However if you want to use the BT DECT phone you have to use the base station built into the BT hub. I believe the BT hub also provides a public service for BT WiFi subscribers.

I'm reading a lot of good things about Netgear Orbi. Is yours the RBK852? I'm seriously thinking about cancelling the Asus order for them. Might as well get the best.

When you said "ISP set to PPPoE", is this a setting in the Orbi, or something I need BT to change?

Otherwise, is it really that simple to setup?

Its the authentication method over Openreach FTTP services - whatever device you plug into the ONT will need to have a PPPoE client to authenticate - be that a BT Hub, a PC wired directly in or for that matter your own router or other device taking the place of the ISP supplied router.
