80/160Mhz on Router

[link to this post]

Currently running my ISP supplied Technicolor DGA4134 router and the WiFi settings on 5Ghz has been set to auto - (20/40/80/160).

I have recently bought a new Macbook Air M1 and looking at the wifi connection on the MBA, it seems to flip-flop between 80 & 160 on its channel, almost every other second or so.

Do i assume the router is pants, and should look at getting something more stable?

Also, the TX rate seems to go from 286 - 1200, although that isnt in sync with the bandwidth changing.

Can you set a fixed channel width of 80 Mhz on the Technicolor AP rather than 'auto'?

Tx rates will change dynamically. That is normal, but the channel width shouldn't flip flop like that.

Decide what speed you need from the wifi and set the channel width accordingly.

Faster does come with some pretty big downsides where wifi is concerned though so I tend to go for 40Mhz which equates to approx. 300mbit.

If I need more for file transfers I would use a wired connection.

Weird thing is, the router is showing a steady 36/160 for the channel and doesn't deviate from that at all.

Ive bitten the bullet and ordered one of these to try.
