Replacing ISP CPE with ONT/GPON Stick

[link to this post]

Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience with replacing ISPs CPE with your own device. I have seen a lot of topics about it on lafibre.info and fourm.fibra.click

Usually, people want to use their own device because ONT or router delivered by their ISP is not enough for them and most big telcos don't care and won't do anything.

Are you guys in UK familiar with such replacement as here - Replace ISP ONT/ONU - LEOX LXT-010S-H SFP GPON Module ?

For most (possibly all) providers in the UK the ONT is owned by the telco and is part of the service delivered. Some ISPs allow the router that connects to the ISP to be replaced but not all (some don't provide a router at all so you have to provide your own). There is one ISP I have seen mentioned recently that will provide an all in one router/ONT if you want to use theirs or will just provide an ONT if you will be providing your own router.

In summary, most ISPs in the UK provide the ONT and you are not allowed to replace it. Also, the ONTs as far as I am aware are all fully capable of supporting the provided service so there is not that much of a driver to replace (unlike the routers where ISP provided routers tend to be cheap low end market models).

I'm from Poland and the biggest provider here is Orange. They have 2 Gb plan in their offer, but CPE provided by them has only 1G ports, so the 2Gb speed in not achivable via cable.

I think that idea about replacing their "Funbox/Livebox" comes from France, as in here - https://lafibre.info/remplacer-livebox/

I saw topic on the polish forum that people in Poland also began replacing their CPE, then I found some guys in Asia (Vietnam, Malaysia) who also do such replacement.

Seems quite interesting and I'm asking mainly because I'm curiuos how it looks worldwide. I haven't seen any topic about it on UK forums, so I decided to ask here.

Here in the UK when Openreach started trailing a 1.8Gb full fibre connection they replaced the existing 1Gb ethernet ONT with a 2.5GB version so I suspect in Poland they would need to do something like that otherwise its pretty useless.

Unless they have wifi7, and are assuming everyone who wants the full 2G will be using wifi and will sit right next to the router.

In the UK people using the FTTP network "nexfibre" and the ISP "virgin media" have done this. Others using the same nexfibre network but with "giffgaff" get a standard ONT with ethernet port.
