Remote Management on a Netgear router

I am trying to set up remote management between my PC and my son's Netgear DG834PN

I have enabled remote management on his machine and restricted it to my ADSL port IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8080 only - but when I try to access him by his IP address http://yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy:8080 I get page unobtainable. I have tried with him logged on and not logged on to the net (but with router booted up and in sync)

Could it be that I have to enter my MAC address as if I was another wireless connection ?(I have restricted his wireless connections to the MAC code of the wireless PC in his house)

Have you checked for Windows (or any other type of firewall) or any Norton rubbish on his or your PC, as a router wouldn't normally get involved with local traffic (the firewall part of the router is more concerned with inbound traffic from t'internet).

I think we are both only using the netgear router firewall and the plusnet (in his case) and the Metronet (in my case) firewalls with windows firewalls turned off and norton etc avoided like the plague. (will have to check this at his end tho - might have the windows one activated but surely that is on the "inside" of his network and I am trying to access his router??

Sorry. Misunderstood - thought you were on the same LAN, and also thought you meant PC remote management.
So you're not on the same LAN (obvious to me now = sorry, thick head on today), and it's the router's remote management you're trying to get into.

Try http://84.48.12.50:8080/start.html (or whatever your son's IP, and port are set to).
If that doesn't work (our office router requires the start.html bit, for some reason), make sure you've allowed the correct IP addresses, or range, and the internet (ISP allocated) IPs not the internal ones.

I just pinged him and that went through OK

Tried the "start" command - no go - I am using his WAN IP address OK

Hmmm...our one at work just went straight in, although I can't remember if we had to set up permissions in the firewall tables.
One thing we did do, however, was change the port (we were already using 8080 for something else), so you could always do the same (I wonder if Plusnet are port blocking).
Is he also on a static IP (some Plusnet accounts have dynamic ones, and if he's re-sync'd it could have changed).
Other than that, I'm all out of ideas, as it normally just works.

Hangs head in shame - when I double checked on the plusnet website what my son's IP no was I realised he had read off the ISPs ip No, - not his own.

But then - strangely if I type http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8080/start.html it lets me enter the password but then goes to a blank page - but if I type in without the /Start.html it goes in normally - then adds /start.htm (with no l) - to the address itself. Also if I add /start.htm myself in goes in also.

So - thanks for the help. Your advice to double check the IP No was spot on. The issue with the L is puzzling tho!!

You shouldn't need to specify the page name - so I'd just leave out the start.htm, given that it works this way.

There is a web server in the router and it serves a page called start.htm. It doesn't serve a page called start.html, so it doesn't have anything to give you when you dial in that URL.

Specifying a page in the URL can be useful if you want to jump straight to some particular info - but of course, the router should intervene and authenticate you before letting you see anything.

Yes thanks - I understand that now - all is working sweetly at the moment - I can now watch what problems he gets on ADSLmax - having run his router on my connection (at 1 Mb fixed) I know his Netgear DG834PN is absolutely stable on that. So far after a couple of days with good connection speed he is getting a spate of "lcp down" logs - - - - but that's another story - another thread
