Going wireless

[link to this post]

Hi

Currently have a 1Mb ADSL connection through a Zoom ADSL USB Modem.

About to change to a potential 16Mb connection using a wireless router. Let's assume I get the full 16Mb for the purposes of these questions.

I think that I could contiue to use the Zoom modem between the Router and computer but this will restrict connection to 8Mb (because of the Zoom modem capability).
But will the wireless router have normal wire connections to link it to my computer as well?
(I'm getting the Sky router)

Or, should I get a wireless adaptor for the computer anyway? If so, what should I look for and what should I avoid in the wireless adaptor market?

Any assistance gratefully received!

The sky router is a netgear dg834 variant and has 4 ethernet ports for wired connections. No need to go wireless. In any case, adjustments to wireless routers are best made via non-wireless connections, so it's as well to have the cabled connection.

The Zoom modem won't operate between the computer-router.

The router has a built in modem so it will connect to your ISP, and you in turn connect to it either wired (preferred by me), or using a wireless device.

Thanks for the extra bit of info.

I kind of thought that...as I was typing it...if the router hase thernet ports then there wouldn't be a need! And ti apparently does have.

Btw... I'm planning on have the router connected to my computer with wire...and my lodger will connect wirelessly. Is it easy, and how do I, block others from "tapping in" to the wireless conenction?

Chris.

Yes, usually.

Enable the encryption feature (e.g. WPA) of the router.
