Do I need a crossover cable here?

[link to this post]

Hi everyone. I currently own a 4-port Bebox but sometimes I need 5-6 ports (especially during social LAN events/parties). Usually, only 1-2 computers need to connect to the 'net, the rest just need to connect to each other.

I bought a Dynamode 8-port switch. I intend to connect the switch to the Bebox and have all the computers connected to the switch (except maybe one or two that connect to the 'net via the Bebox).

Will I need a Cat 5e/Cat 6 crossover cable if I will be connecting the input of the switch to the output of the Bebox router? Or will a plain cable do if I connect the output of the switch to the output of the Bebox?

Thanks.

If either your switch or your router is "auto-sensing" then it'll all be handled automatically, in which case it doesn't matter if it's a crossover cable or not.

Most modern kit seems to have this feature.

<Edit> Bebox is a linux/beos box running as a router?

Not sure. But it is a Speedtouch 716 with
Software Release: 5.4.0.11
Software Variant: AZ
Boot Loader Version: 1.0.1

Does that help?

Ah, no. I thought you had one of these.

But the speedtouch is auto-sensing:

Wired Ethernet The SpeedTouch
