Full Firewall blocks access for the whole network

[link to this post]

Hello All

I built a little file server for a friend due to the fact that the correct machine that was hosting the files had Norton firewall on it.

I had however forgotten that if Norton firewall is on it seeks to block access to work the work group from any other computer even if the box with Norton is not involved.

so assuming that

box 1 / box with Norton

box 2 / file server

box 3 / other computer without full firewall.

If i turn off the Norton firewall on box 1 box 3 can see the work group and thus access the files on 2 and visa virsa but not with the firewall on.

I have noticed this problem on other networks, my question is why does it happen if IE box 1 isn't involved and is there a work around for this without having to disable Norton every time someone wants to access the work group.

I would be greatly appreciative of any tips / advice

This means that the box with Norton on has elected itself as the master browser for the network - and it therefore preventing 'box 3' from being able to access the workgroup.

You should be able to set an exclusion on Norton for the local subnet (workgroup) which would fix the problem.

Alternatively, enable NetBEUI on the LAN cards - which Norton will ignore - I wouldn't go for this in a million years but I'm biassed against non routable protocols...!

Open Norton Internet Security.

Select 'Personal Firewall'

Select 'Configure'

Select 'Networking' tab and add your local network to the trusted list.

*edit* clarity
