Inconsistent connection speeds

Hi, I'm in the process of switching laptops from a Compaq nc4010 to a Sumsung R40. During this change I've noticed that the thinkbroadband speedtest shows that my old laptop measures a Download speed of 3.2MB but my new laptop Downloads at 1.4MB. Both record the same upload spead of 0.4MB. Can anyone help me identify why this is and if it's simply a setting in the Firewall software (which is CheckPoint Integrity) let me know where and what to change?

I doubt this is a firewall issue (firewalls tend to block all potentially harmful stuff - letting it through, albeit slowly, would defeat the object).

Check the MTU setting in the network card of the new laptop.
Depending on which ISP you're with (some recommend 1478, others 1492, some 1500).
At most, it should be the same as is set in your router, and it should be that which is recommended by your ISP (in my case, 1492).
If the one in the router is set to default (1500), don't worry about that.
Use DrTCP (can be found by Googling) to check and adjust your MTU.

Also, is there anything on your new laptop that could be screwing around (e.g. Norton)?

You don't mention if you're connecting the laptops by cable or wireless.

is your laptop's wireless card b or g spec?

How are you connecting, USB modem or ethernet router. If it is a modem, or if you re-sync the router when you swap, what sync speeds are you getting?

The R40 has 11b/g as standard
