Wireless access point for wired router (for Wii)

At risk of asking a stupid question, I was just wondering if when adding a wireless access point to an ethernet router (by cat5 cable) compatibility was ensured. I have an old connexant based router bought from adslnation a while back. I was thinking of getting a netgear rangemax WPN802 access point but on the diagram it shows it being connected to a ProSafe router or something...

Is this just an example router or is it designed to be used with this. Also if anyone knows out of interest would this access point be ok with the wii, as this is the main reason I'm looking at it.

I can't answer the question about the RangeMax/Connexant but the Wii should connect with no problem. I have mine connected (with WPA-PSK) to my Netgear DG384 and it works a treat..

It'll work fine. The Netgear will simply plug into a spare ethernet port and should work without any changes needed. You will want to butchers at the instructions and/or run the disc supplied to get your wireless network encrypted, preferably using WPA-PSK.

One thing worth noting is that proprietry equipment such as Netgears Rangemax is designed to work with Rangemax equipment on both sides of the link. Although a standard 802.11g wireless device (such as the Wii) will work just fine, the extra dollars you spent on getting a Rangemax device will be mostly* wasted. You may as well opt for a cheaper, standard 11g access point.

* I say mostly since companies such as Netgear claim that technology such as Rangemax does indeed improve the performance of standard 11g devices too. I've not seen them make much of an impact myself mind.

Your biggest problem will be in getting the Wii to work with the access point. They're very finicky with the connections. One tip I learned is to set the wireless for 54g only -don't allow mixed speed working.

I have to disagree.. Mine is not finicky at all - typed in the WPA key and away I went..

Oh, mine connects OK - it's just rather reluctant to do firmware updates.
