Netgear WNR854T - do i need a modem too?

just bought one of these and it will be delivered tomorrow. i assumed it was all i needed to connect, but now after some more research i think i need an adsl ethernet modem as well.

am i right?

and if i am right will any old ethernet modem do? like i would not want the performance of this pretty good router dragged down by a crappy modem.

another thing that occurs to me is this - i currently use a 3com office connect modem / router, and i was thinking i could use this as the modem (assuming i need one that is) by setting it to be a dmz.

and before i forget, i should mention that i am on an adsl max connection - not cable.

the clue is in its name "Cable Router ".

Change it for one incorporating an ADSL modem, it will be simpler.

yeah it would be simpler - but you do not get a modem/router that has all the features i am after.

i'd appreciate it if someone could take a look at my questions and try to answer them.

you can put a cable router behind an ADSL modem/router, I'm typing this on such a setup right now.

Ethernet modems are rare, and not problem free. ADSLnation have an X-modem and there's a Dlink 300. Do Netgear do one ? should list its compatibility with your new toy.

well i ended up buying the netgear DM111P.

it is a modem only. most of the rest are also low spec routers.

they are all low spec routers with PPPoA, with a Bridged mode or some kludge added to pass the external IP to the device behind. Only PPPoE can work as designed with a cable router / ADSL modem combo, and not all ISPs support it. The Netgear seems aimed for your intended application so it should be fine.

i've got the router now and i am currently using my old 3com as the modem (dmz with all firewall settings off) and the netgear is working fine, but i will be happier when i don't have my connection running through 2 routers (should be by tomorrow morning).

i brought one of these the other day and connected it up to virgin cable broadband which i've just got too, and the router works great. wifi reception all round the house and garden is excellent.
