8 IPs

[link to this post]

Ok, I am about to change IPs and would like to take the 8 IP option so I can run the webserver on a different IP to the other machines on my network.

Problem is that this is a new side for me and I don't know if my router allows it (3com 3CRWDR101A-75) and if it does how to configure it. Can anyone assist?

Many routers do not support 8 IP subnets, so you are wise to checkup.

But I will leave it to someone with direct knowlege of your router to give you the bad news.

Line One:- Zen Home 500 - DrayTek Vigor 2600VG
Line Two:- currently Nildam, but looking for a new home - DrayTek Vigor 2600

Not my line but I guess you assign one of the IP addresses to your web-server and another to your router. This leaves 6 addresses spare (although in practice you may only have 4 spare).

Use the Virtual Server function of your router to pass web-server activity through and put all your other machines on DHCP behind NAT.

Your router (like most nowadays) seems to support this.

Sounds like good news. I'll have to have a play with the settings when I have the block and see what happens

I think there will be 6 from the email I saw from my (soon to be) new ISP

With an 8 IP option, two addresses are "reserved" (one is the bradcast address for the subnet and one the network address for the subnet) so you get 6 usable addresses. Of these you normally need to allocate one to the ADSL-side of the router, leaving five (5) addresses to allocate to actual devices.

The (3com 3CRWDR101A-75) router is made to handle 8 Static IP addresses, it has 8 ATM PVCs that you configure with the static IP addresses supplied from your ISP.

Within the router select, Internet Settings -> ATM PVC
