Installing a gigabit network

[link to this post]

Hi,

Hoping for some guidance from those more experienced than myself.

I'm planning on installing a gigabit network throughout the house so i can stream my media everywhere.

The issue i have is that i can't seem to find any Cat6 wall sockets that look reasonable to have in every room of my house. I've found plenty of Cat5 chrome finish wall sockets but only white in Cat6, and i dont fancy that industrial look.

So, my questions are;

- Am i right in assuming that connecting Cat5 sockets at the end of my Cat6 solid cable will result in the reduction in available bandwidth at that port?

- Anyone know where i can get some decent Cat6 sockets?

Thanks in advance for any help

In reply to:

why not just get some AV homeplugs

be a bit expensive to connect several items together, surely ? Besides, they don't do them in chrome

Since Cat5e supports gigabit even if you reduced the spec to cat5e you'd still be fine.

Cat6 is a pain to install!

You can plug them into your chrome power sockets though - I don't know of many electrical items that have chrome plugs

I'm aware of the option to use Cat5e, except i'm trying to 'future-proof' my cabling considering it's going under the floorboards, in the walls etc.

As it happens, i can't find any decent Cat5e panels either.

I can't be doing with any of those bling sockets, they're all junk when you're trying to line them up or fit them. Crappy old white plastic suits me.

Try Contactum - Cat5e in brushed or polished chrome, plus some brass options.
