Using DynDNS for your own DNS?

I come across a thread that mentions creating your own DNS, basically because Be*s aren't too good.

What I need to know is, what steps do you take as such, and is it similar to entering DNS in the LAN properties page, like you would OpenDNS?

What exactly are you trying to do? do you just want to host a website/ftp With a domain over your connection or are you talking about DNS for resolving domain names such as www.google.co.uk?

If you are wanting to host a domain name (example: http://mycomp.dyndns.org) for a web, ftp or game server, you don't need to do anything on your end. all you need to do is give your ip address to the DNS host. if you are on a dynamic IP then it's a case of having to install a DNS updater (see your DNS provider's help about that).

If you just need to resolve DNS addresses then leave you ISP's DNS settings as is. you shouldn't ever need to change those values.

I use Dyndns.com as I have a dynamic IP with Bulldog (I will with Be* too, much to tight to pay ). I have a domain name registered with them (it's free), so that I can access my computer from the outside world without having to remember the IP addy. You need a program running on the PC checking the external IP (the one that you get from your ISP) and if it changes then the progam notifies the servers at Dyndns.com of the new IP addy.
This function is acually built into some ADSL routers (Belkin 7633 for one), however I have a script running on my music server as it is running 24/7.

Can be useful even if you have a static IP (saves having to remember the numbers).

This is not the same as running your own DNS, though it can be done (google 'bind' Unix prog).
