internet slow when router connected

Hi all,

Just got talk talk and internet speed is fine when connected to a single computer using the supplied modem, but slows significantly when connected through a router (Netgear DG814). The speed drops as low as about dial up speed but is quite intermittant. Is there any settings that need changing, or any other processes that may have affected the download speed?
