Want my PC to remotely access another..How.

[link to this post]

Hi All
I have windows xp home edition installed and i want to remotely access my mothers pc who is just down the road and has a few issues now and again.

Easier for me to try and connect remotely..I have looked at how you do this by doing a search but i don't see the settings that they are asking me to click on for some unknown reason.

What exactly do i need to do this and do i obviously need my mothers ip address or something.

As you can see this is all new to me and i am not that up on technical stuff as it is.

Remote Assistance is supposedly all you need and is allegedly built into most versions of windows, but I've never bothered with it.

Look for a VNC based package - RealVNC works for me. http://www.realvnc.com/products/download.html - though I don't recall having to sign up for it in the past. Hmm, try tightvnc too.

Remote Assistance is the best thing to use since it is more efficient (in terms of updating the screen) than third-party tools such as VNC.
To use it you (and your mother) need to sign up to MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger and it should be fairly straightforward to use.
We have even managed to use this to my father's PC when he was still on dialup.

I tried RA and the first put-off was the need for an IM account. My second issue was that it seemed to need someone at the far end to OK the connection. Maybe there's a way round this, or some set-up option that I've missed,

However, neither of these considerations applies with VNC, and I was looking for a way to operate a remote and umanned PC. VNC is also cross-platform, not Windows-specific, so I can access a Windows PC from Linux and vice versa.

If you're working windows to windows, and the other user is there then RA is probably the best option.

RA looked like it might work on a LAN but after that you were into port forwarding and gawd knows what else.
