Long range wireless

[link to this post]

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone here has any thoughts on using wireless technologies such as radio/microwave/milliwave to connect to a standard highspeed ADSL connection over distances well beyond the reach of wifi.

I'm having trouble finding details of costs which is probably a bad sign

Thanks

Barry

A tube made of pringles works quite well apparently.

But more seriously what you describe is what is being done for the last few exchanges in Scotland I think.

Hi, 3Com did make a wireless point to point bridge, that will reach 10 miles.

The maximum Equivalent isotropically radiated power (EIRP) for wi-fi in the EU is limited to 20 dBm, or 100mW. So, basically if you are using an antenna with "gain", the power fed to the antenna will have to be reduced to keep the EIRP below 100mW. If you want to use higher powers over a fixed link, you will need a special licence to do this.

As previously said once you exceed the EIRP you need a license. There is some kit here or have a google for OZ bridge or Alvarion.

Hello

Thanks for all your replies, I'll check out that gear now - its been knowing what to look for that stumped me.

In the mean time the distance is just shy of 5miles/8km (or 1.25miles/2km if I can convince the boss to put the highspeed line in my flat...)

Cheers again

Barry

2km is no great issue with wifi and directional high gain antenna.

8km might be better on 5.x GHz with a pair of Ubiquiti nanostations.
