Router to Stop Net Access At Certain Times

[link to this post]

Hello, am looking for a router that I could buy which might do the following:

To be set to stop Internet access for my childrens laptops at say 8pm every evening and not allow access until the following day again. Is this possible I would need to set it all up as haviung static IPs and no DHCP I guess? The broadband is standard Max DSL althoguh DSL 2 available here next year so would like it to be able to work with that when it comes.

Look forward to hearing any suggestions, Thanks

I believe the Netgear DG834 range of routers allows this. My DG834G has the ability to set a schedule and use that with the firewall rules to disable all access at other times. It's not overly flexible but I think it could probably do what you want.

Hi, the 3Com OfficeConnect 3CRWDR101A-75 ADSL2/2+ Wireless 54 Mbps 11g Firewall Router will configure as you have requested.

http://www.lambda-tek.com/componentshop/index.pl?prodID=B47303

PC Privileges
The Router can be configured to restrict access to the Internet, email or
other network services at specific days and times. Restriction can be set
for a single computer, a range of computers, or multiple computers and
you can define the traffic type permitted or not-permitted to the Internet.

The impressive very easy to use firmware makes this router a doddle to configure.

As you say the Netgear DG834G lets you set up a schedule to block internet access at certain times. On my Netgear DG834G you can let one trusted machine (by IP adddress) have access during the blocked period.

If you use the schedule and firewall rules you can actually specify that a particular IP (or group of IPs) are blocked from all IP access in the scheduled times. So, you could actually only block the machines that should be blocked. But probably better to block everything apart from the ones you specifically want to get through.

It also has parental control but not sure I'd trust it to catch everything - red (or black) lists are usually not that good.

However, for all of this static IPs are essential (actually statically assigning via the router is better as then you can tie the IP to the MAC address and not have to mess with the PC configs).
