Weird land line issue

[link to this post]

Hi everyone.

I'm not sure if that's the correct section or even forum to post my problem but I couldn't find something else. It'a a very weird problem with my land line

Around March I moved places and had to cancel my talk talk account and apply for a new one in my new place. When I moved in, there was a land line but it was dead. The talktalk technician came one day, connected the line, gave us the number and told us "your line is now working". I then applied for a new bethere connection and everything worked perfect. After around 2-3 months I've noticed that I haven't received a bill from talktalk. So I called them cause I thought maybe the bill was lost or something. I should say here that their customer service sucks but most of you already now that I guess. A woman told me that my line is "pending" and not active yet. When I told her I'd been making calls for 3 months from that line she sounded confused and said that they will check it and get back to me. The exact same conversation took place 4 more times with 4 different consultants within a couple of weeks. All of them told me that talktalk doesn't provide me wiht a land line and that it's my previous company. Finally the last one told my that my application has been rejected for technical reasons(!!!!) and that I am no longer a talktalk customer. I also called BT to ask them if the are responsible for my current number and they told me no. Meanwhile, 2-3 days after my first call to talktalk, I was unable to make calls from my land line, but I could receive and also broadband was working fine. After a week or something I was able to make calls again!!!!

So I'm having a land line without paying a bill. But because life is never that kind, II'm afraid I will receive a bill someday and have to pay a huge amount all by once.

Any thoughts??

Thanks!

I'm afraid you are right in thinking that you might be landed with a huge bill when the "rightful" supplier discovers the line.

Are you paying an ADSL bill to Be? If so you are likely to have a BT phone line and probably ought to be paying line rental at least to BT.

Perhaps Be know? As far as you know is it either a BT line or a TalkTalk line? You could ask Be.

2 points spring to mind:

1) it would be intereting to dial "100" and see if a BT operator answers. I'm not sure what other operator nos exist - I guess a google search might tell you. I think TalkTalk use 100 too but I'm not sure.

2) A few years ago, BT stopped billing my parents for several months. When the error was rectified, a quick call to OFTEL (now OFCOM) established exactly what BT could / couldn't charge in arrears and it was sorted out very quickly and to my parents' advantage. Apparently this would have worked out the same way even if they hadn't made efforts to alert BT

I'd suggest calling OFCOM and asking their opinion:

"If you want to talk to Ofcom please call us on 020 7981 3040 or 0300 123 3333"

Good luck.

Dial 17070 if its a BT line then you will be told your phone number and get the test otions. TalkTalk do not offer this option, though BT resellers ie Post Office may may still give the BT line options.
