help guys please...pc has locked up..

[link to this post]

os win xp sp3

guys i need some help please.. i was attempting to set up a home network when my system locked up..i changed the various setting to enable file sharing....

after the settings on my desk top were changed it asked me to reboot the system for the various settings to take effect...

after the reboot my pc started up,but instead of taking me to my usual log in screen it took me to a screen where the only options i had were to reboot or turn off..i cant seam to get the pc past this stage.

if i atempt to sign in in safe mode it ends up taking me back to this screen where the only options are turnoff/restart

any 1 came accross this before.....???

thanks..

Hit the F8 or F5 key continually at startup until you see the boot screen. Select "Last Known Good Configuration".
However, it's doubtful that attempting to set up sharing caused this.

yea m8 i have used that setting as well.......still takes me back to the same page where only options are turn off/restart...

i am 99.9% confident that changing these settings caused this.......everything was fine and my system is clean.....

the issue in question here only happend when i was asked to reboot following changing some settings...

thanks for your imput though....

Sound like reasonable things to try,

Probably, your best option now is to boot from the XP CD and select the "Repair" option. The XP CD should really be slipstreamed to SP3.
It's still difficult to believe that simple file sharing etc set up caused this. Maybe your hard drive or other hardware is dying?

The UBCD4Win or one of the other "PE's" may help but your mate's repair shop may be a better option.

As for the IP conflict, use DHCP rather than static addresses - At least until you've got the system running.

no still cant get the desk top to get by the turnoff/restart screen..

i am on my laptop at the moment...my lap top is connected to my network by wifi...no issues with this machine....

but i did get a warning in the bttm right of my screen beside the netwk connection icon telling me there was an ip confliction attempting to connect to my network.......

not sure if that is coming from my desktop as i attempt to get it on...

cheers

Besides the network icon? That was probably a software firewall warning.

What I should have said above is that once the system is running, use DHCP until sharing etc is working OK. Once it is, allocate static IP's if you need to.
