Best cable setup between router and PC?

[link to this post]

I'd appreciate any comments on the following:

I'm about to install a new b/band connection, router etc. Please could you tell me if there's any problem having a very long ethernet cable connection between router and PC (I prefer not to have wireless connection).

My BT socket is about 25 metres away from where I use my PC: is there any advantage in having my (wired) router near my PC and connected by a short ethernet cable. Then have a long phone cable between BT socket and router? Or should the router be close to the BT socket / micro filter, and I then have a long ethernet cable (about 25 metres aound the walls) connecting router to my PC? Is there a maximum length for an ethernet cable?

Thanks in advance.

A shorter phone cable and longer Ethernet cable is best, no problems with 25metres up to 100 if you want.

Hi GMAN.

Wondered if you can explain or give links on why the short cable to the router, than the long cable to the PC. I ask because I'll be re-wiring my set-up in the future, and planned for a long to the router and short to the PC (in fact the router would sit on the PC case for ease of access/monitoring.)

Ta!

The phone line carries the (analogue) ADSL signal which is more susceptible to noise/interference than the Ethernet digital signal.

Thanks very much for the info.

I also need to get a micro filter: I've been told that a good quality one is important, like the XF1E (made by ADSL Nation ) . Is therer much difference in performance / build-quality between this top-of-the-price-range one and a £3 one (made by Dynamo I think).?

Thanks in advance.

In reply to a post by camieabz:
in fact the router would sit on the PC case for ease of access/monitoring.
And perfectly placed to pick up all the interference from the PC (which can be a lot) crazy

As GMAN said- short phone and long Ethernet leads is best.

I should actually be more specific. I'll be running an extension from the master to a wall point (hard-wired with CAT6 cable), then plugging the router into said point which will be one meter from the PC. Then a half meter CAT6 RJ45 cable from the router to the PC.

As above and also the signal for the internet connection is powered from the Exchange kilometres away so its already travelled quite a distance there's no sense extending it even further especially when some extension cables are of quite low quality. You'd be surprised what difference having a long (or poor) extension or extension cord can have on your sync speed.

As close to the master socket as you can with the shortest cable for the best results.

That sounds better smile

But I'd still be a bit wary about parking the router actually on the PC. It may well be OK, but a check wouldn't be misplaced.
