Wireless bridge - hardware advice

[link to this post]

Hi All,

I've got an ethernet over power network connected to a Sky wireless router. I'm getting some pretty bad pings and I was wondering whether I'd get any improvement if I got a wireless bridge or router instead of going over the power cables (and through at least 2 fuse boxes)?

The router will be approximately 15m away from the router and will have to send the signal through at least 2 brick walls.

Any ideas on what hardware I should use? Should I get a dedicated bridge, or should I get a router and turn it into a bridge?

Thanks

Andy

First need to check how bad the wireless is, if a laptop cannot see the wireless router, a chance that a wireless bridge will not.

Good point. I'd not thought about doing that. I'll give it a go later.

Thanks.

The powerline adapters usually don't add a great deal of latency, though I suppose if you're a gamer it can matter more.

Best advice I can give is to make sure you have them plugged straight into the ring main in each location. Extension strips, especially surge-protected ones, reduce the connection speed a lot.

When you are testing, are you pinging the IP of your router, or something external?

You're right. I did a bit of testing yesterday. They appear to add about 4ms, but there are stability issues (sometimes the tracert to news.bbc.co.uk went up to 250ms+).

The laptop gets a signal when I hold it head high. It is a fair signal (according to Vista) but I'd need to attach the bridge to the wall to get a decent signal I think.

Thanks for the help.
