network router

I have an d link modem router that i do not use .
I used a o2 router for broadband but have moved it to master socket which is 10 meters away from my computers and printer that are on the network.
I have a network cable from o2 router to main computer but need link to network printer
can i use the d link modem router as a router to make a network

It can be done.

I assume your d-link router is an ADSL modem router.

You need to ensure that both routers are on the same subnet (ie 192.168.1.x)
You need to ensure that both routers have different IP addresses.
You need to ensure that only one router is set to issue IP addresses to connected devices (DHCP)
You need to ensure that the default gateway is set to the internet facing router.

The best way to do this is check the IP address of the O₂ router, and assign the d-link router a different address in the same range. So if the O₂ router is 192.168.1.254 then give the d-link router 192.168.1.253. And then turn off the DHCP server on the d-link router. Once this is done you want to connect the cable from the O₂ router to one of the LAN ports on the d-link router.

If the d-link router is not an ADSL modem router it may be easier still.

If you give the model of the D-link router we can offer more comprehensive advice.

Can't it be done with just 1 router, the O2 one, assuming it has more than 1 LAN port? Thus saving all this messing around with IPs?

Essentially my advise turns the d-link router into a network switch.

you could achieve the same thing with a switch, or by running multiple cables from the 0₂ router (if it has multiple ports) It can also be done by splitting a single cat5e cable, but splitting a cat5e cable is not trivial, and requires the necessary tools.

Technically, No. What you need is just a switch, not a router.

However, as pmb00cs has already suggested, you can use the switch built into the Dlink equipment that you have. His suggestion effectively disables the router functions in the Dlink.

now gone 7days without reboot
where as before it was every couple of days
seams to have settled down since moving router to main socket and using net work cable to dlink
