Wireless Speed?

Hi all!!!

ok... i just purchased a new Wireless N USB stick for my Desktop pc, but it seems to only be connecting up to 150mb at the moment instead of the 300mb it should be capable of.

Can anyone shed some light on whats wrong etc?

Here is some info i think might help...

Router is the Netgear VMDG280
I have a Wireless USB stick, Netgear Wireless N-300, i also have another computer with the same stick.

Also there are 3 other computers on my network, and they all have wireless G at the moment. (one possibly is a Wireless B, but that is being checked later today and changed over to my now spare Wireless G)

The router is setup to be "up to 300mbps speed"
and uses WPA-PSK[TKIP] + WPA2-PSK[AES] encryption...

You can't have G and N at the same time

So if i leave it as it is i will be limited to just 150mbps?

seems abit weird...

i thought my N adapters would be able to get up to 300, and my G adapters would get their 54 or what ever they can get...

hmmmmm

You could try disconnecting the G ones to prove it can connect at 300.

Netgear VMDG280: This is a Virgin supplied router. I would guess that as it it does not have a "N" in its name but a "G", that it is only Wireless-G.

Wirelessis a shared medium so only works at the speed of the slowest device so if you have a mix of G and N devices it will work at the G speeds.
To prove do as Batboy says and switch off the G devices and see if things improve but judging by another comment they may not.

Its Definitely an N Router.

But it seems its only single band and only allows up to 150mb.

Wireless speeds are a bit of a con, they advertise the speeds the equipment is capable of in ideal laboratory conditions.

To get those speeds in the real world you need to be sat practically on top of the router.

Any doors or walls in the way will slow down the connection.

Any electromagnetic interference in or near the 2.4GHz band will reduce the connection speeds.

Any other wireless networks in an overlapping channel in range of any of the connected devices will reduce the connection speed.

Often devices from different manufacturers will not quite work as well together as they ought.

Its also worth noting that the speed the connection syncs at runs in speed bands.
The highest single stream speed band for the wireless n standard is 150Mbps, the 300Mbps speed quoted relies upon using 2 separate data streams.
This means the equipment at either end must support MIMO connections with at least 2T2R connectivity.

For the 150Mbps speed you also need to have the network set to use a 40MHz wide channel instead of the normal 20MHz wide channel. In the 2.4GHz spectrum this will mean you suffer more impact from other networks, and also impact upon more wireless networks outside your own.
