Public WIFI

Hi there,
i am looking to setup a free public wifi Say "Public-WIFI-B&B" (SSID)
but i need to have an access point or router with wireless that can use my current network (Private LAN) to access the wan but hiding the internal computers,
Ideally it would have to have a dhcp server as i would like the users on a seperate subnet and ip address so i can put a maximum throttle on the router so my bandwidth is not effected, to say 3Mb for the public and 4.5Mb for us
Any help appreciated on what harware to use

One small point - some wireless cards and WAPs have problems with hyphens (and some other symbols) in the SSID. I found this out a couple of years back when it took me 4 hours of hair pulling to understand why I could not get the PC and WAP to connect properly - underscores _ _ _ _ worked OK by not hyphens!

If you want to offer public wifi I would suggest doing so through your existing router and getting a seperate router/firewall for your home LAN.

Domestic and SOHO routers and wireless access points rarely have the features you would need to do what you propose safely.

You could also splash out on a more expensive router that offers wireless isolation, and multiple SSID's

Draytek routers are good.

What sort of internet connection do you have ADSL, Cable, or BT Infinity (fibre to the cab)?

I currently have bt business 8Mb unlimited adsl, static ip and a TP-Link-Modem and a TP-Link-Router
Ready for infinity if it becomes available in my area, as i use a cable modem which is what infinity requires, would like to have a seperate router and network for public, but use my existing router as the internet connection, i do not want them to see all my internal traffic,
If you could give me some tips on what i need to do i would be grateful

With your current setup the cheapest way to do it would be to get a cheap cable wireless router. If you do that you want the modem on the internet, with the WAN of the router used to provide the public network connected to that, with the WAN of the router used to provide your LAN connected to the LAN of that router.


Or as I say you could replace your existing router with one that is more expensive, and provides more features, such as the draytek 2920 range But that would depend on what you want to spend.

That would be a fine router (would replace your existing modem as well) However the featured model does not have wireless built in. You would need one of the models with an "n" at the end of the model name.

Oh and just a quickie, does dialup work on a telephone line that has broadband on
So, telephone and broadband split by splitter and dialup from telephone to computer, does this work?

It did when I tried a couple of years ago - problem with ISP - but don't have any numbers/accounts to use now, so removed the external modem.
