I'm currently using a BT homehub 2 and my ethernet cable is connected via a netgear fast ethernet switch and then Cat 5 cabled 40 metres away from hub into another building. Can I use a netgear N150 wireless Adsl 2+ modem router at the other end to provide a wireless signal. Can I just plug it in or do I need to disconnect the modem facility? If so how do you do it?

Hi Ian, using the BT homeHub 2 as your main router and the netgear N150 router as the access point configure�

BT HomeHub 2 (default) IP Address 192.168.1.254

First DHCP Address: 192.168.1.21
Last DHCP Address: 192.168.1.250

Connect the two routers Lan to Lan with Cat5 Ethernet cable.

Disable DHCP in Netgear N150 Router

Netgear N150 wireless Router make IP Address 192.168.1.253

Configure wireless for both routers with same channel: 9

Configure wireless security for each router with same WPA-PSK password.

Main router SSID: Mickey Mouse

Wireless access point: SSID: Minnie Mouse

E7er advise should work. I however would choose a different ip address for the Netgear N150. The ip address 192.168.1.253 is normally already taken in the BT homehub for the usb port. You may get problems if you choose this address for the netgear.

Hi BP1, I agree it would not be suitable to use the BT Home Hub2 USB port IP Address for the access point, tell you the truth, I didn�t know the Home Hub2 had a USB port. The OP could use 192.168.1.251 for the access point.

I would not use the router Default IP Address I consider it a security risk, change the third octet to 15 this would have to be done with all the other IP Addresses. 192.168.15.251

Meh, security through obscurity. Not a huge advantage (but granted better than nought)

Also I would question the need to set different SSID's. Set the SSID's the same, and on different channels with the same security settings and windows will treat it as the same network (which it is) and connect to the AP that has the best signal, at any given time, moving from to the other on the fly maintaining any connections (will be a slight blip as arp tables and the like update, but for most applications should be transparent to the user)

I agree with using the same SSIDs. I setup my network like this and have 3 WAPs. My old house has very thick stone walls that limit the WiFi range, but setup like this I can roam from one room to another with the iPhone and the transition from one WAP to the next is seamless. It also means if I have visitors, then they only need one wireless setup. Nearest neighbours are half a mile away, so channel interference is not an issue for me
