Are there any disadvantages to ADSL compared to ADSL2 I should be aware of ?
only that it should go slower and maybe be a bit less robust.
Obviously the equipment you and the ISP were using didn't make a very good job of it between them but there are features in ADSL2 that should give faster speeds.
I get 600k more downstream and 100k more upstream on ADSL2 compared to ADSL from Talk Talk LLU (5400 vs 4800)

Try a rephrase...
We have seen cases where lines running ADSL2+ if dropped to ADSL only mode can perform better sync/stability wise.
Now if the ISP knows what ADSL2 is (rare) then dropping to that mode should be the same as ADSL mode, with the same sync.
It is all down to the individual line, noise environment, exchange and consumer hardware, so no firm rules in this area.

ADSL is definitely faster than ADSL 2+ for me (4.6 d/l vs 3.8 d/l) - hence my request to O2 to keep me on ADSL profile.
Robustness will be tested over coming weeks

Hi
During O2's protracted investigation into my line dropouts, I discovered that ADSL gives me faster connection than ADSL2.
Hopefully the problem is now sorted (line changed between local exchange & my green box).
I've asked O2 to keep me on ADSL, due it performance increase & the fact that I'm never going to get anywhere near 8MB on this line.
Are there any disadvantages to ADSL compared to ADSL2 I should be aware of ?

I should really point out that there is ADSL / ADSL2 / ADSL2+
ADSL is also limited to 768kbit upstream compared with the ADSL2+ of 1mbit is quite a common upstream. 1mbit up is common on lines syncing as low as 7-8mbit.
I had a problem with adsl being faster than adsl2+ it turned out to be a firmware issue and incompatible kit between the exchange and the router. Was 6mbit adsl turned into 12mbit adsl2+ after changes. adsl2+ before was 5mbit...
Also the ring wire hack can sort out the adsl2+ problems. After this I went from 12mbit to 16mbit.

Your 4648 is pretty much what one would expect for that amount of attenuation. With little or no gain by going to ADSL2+.
The FEC errors while have been corrected, are a high and may be affecting the throughput. Have you removed the ring wire?

What's the ring wire ?
I disconnected the master socket from the 2 wires connecting to rest of house sockets (?blue & green).

Blue and green, old colour names, sounds like the external drop wire cable.
