10kw hr or power per day - So £1 to £1.20 ... £350 to £450 per year ...
The outer would cost £10 per year to run ...
Not a really cost effective solution.

Thanks for the comment. I don't think I'd want to leave a spare old computer on 24/7. I had considered a device-in-a-plug option such as Raspberry Pi or Pogoplug. I wouldn't mind a solution like this because they often use *very* little electricity (and will be left on all the time, of course) and are extremely flexible. But some are still quite pricey (not R Pi, but that's not out yet) and would need more Linux/embedded know-how than I currently possess so I'd need to mug up on that before going ahead.
And I could still use OpenDNS, for example, to manage DNS updates so I wouldn't need to worry about filtering for myself and could just concentrate on logging and time limits (plus fun stuff like turning all their images upside down, etc.!).

Yes, a good rule of thumb is 1W costs about £1 a year if left on all the time. Those computer-in-a-plug gadgets, however, can take from 1-5W so are not that bad for the environment/wallet.
[Not sure an old computer would be using 300W all the time, however.]

I have several running 24/7 and with the screens turned off, they use considerably less than that.
I take you point though.

It would have to set with a fairly long sleep/hibernate timeout to ensure good response times and Wake-on-Lan set up - here it would be on for around 18-20 hours per day.

The old PC I used as a print server/ fax interface and some additional storage - with screen off/hibernate was running around 350W ... a good reason to get rid of it!

Low power CPU's, use of passive cooling etc all play a part, not having a fast graphics card
350W does sound high

The operative word in the first post and mine was OLD ...
Inefficient PSUs, active cooling due to bad design and clogged with dust, cards that don't have low power modes and are always on, standard CPUs ...

Even that would cost £200/year to run ...
Mine was from around '98/'99 ... and when we turned it off we certainly saw the power bills drop!
