Thanks for everyone's help.

After trying various security settings I have decided to go back to WPA on the main router as the initial connection, after switching on the laptop, was taking a long time to establish.

After a sweating 3 hours of lifting floorboards and routing ethernet cable I have managed to connect the 2 routers from dining room to study.

I assume the second router, in bridge mode, is working as a switch!
