FTTC Connection over CAT5e to patch panel

Hi,

In advance of upgrading to FTTC, I have run a CAT5 cable from my patch panel down to where the existing BT master socket is.

The patch panel end is connected, the other end is coiled, ready to be connected to the new BT faceplate.

Will BT entertain this?

I don't really want exposed cables, (my current ADSL is all hardwired) so will BT use my CAT5 cable?

Someone must have done this before!?!

There are plenty of ways around it ... Install the modem close to the master and then run the WAN output (Ethernet) up to your patch panel and then to the Hub/Router. OR install the MODEM close by until BT have gone and then move it, making connection yourself. OR terminate it in anRJ45 socket, then link with a short RJ11 lead.

This weekend I have seen a Cat5e extension - very well wired, but the sync was very low. Moved the modem to the area of the master and it was a massive improvement - even with Cat5e the noise being picked up was having a really bad effect. I always work on the premise of keeping internal wiring as short as possible.

Having the modem near the master socket could be done, but ascetically - not good.

Moving the master socket is a great idea, I wonder if the engineer would do that?
Would he use the CAT5 I've installed, or would he have to run more BT cable?

It all needs a sort out, there are two master sockets, one unused, left over from when we had two lines back in pre-ADSL, dial-up days.

I need the voice connections in the patch panel too, as they are now. This is for structured cabling, which is ideal for that phone socket whch Sky insist on having, just patch one over to a nearby CAT5 outlet!

Temporarily terminate your Cat5e wit a plug or socket. Get the Modem installed at the Master location and use the Cat5e to feed the WAN connection to your patch panel and then to the Router.

Then make legitimate changes yourself.

The full VDSL master socket is in four parts: Back Box, Master Socket termination (top half); VDSL filter which is full length but with the top half protruding and bottom set back and unfiltered output in the top; and finally Voice connection lower half.

Using a suitable pair from your Cat5e cable, connect to the IDC pair on the VDSL filter plate - top left, then with another pair, connect to 2 and 5 on the voice plate IDC and possibly a single one of a pair to 3 (ring wire - may be better without, provided your phones are able to ring without it).

At the patch panel break out the VDSL and voice signals.

Ring wire snipped out ages ago, not required.

I think/believe/may have been told/read, that the master socket top connection (data) runs over the blue pair to pins 4 + 5 (Using 568B)

Which pins carry voice?

Would it be easier/possible/workable, to split the CAT5 at the patch panel, so that data is on one port (pins 4+5) and voice (pins unknown?) on another?

You are missing the point, I believe.

Terminate on the internal IDC connections not through the socket.

Filtered voice is NOT presented, as far as I know, on the RJ45, but just on the BT 431A (BS6312) socket.

That's my intention, to use the IDC connections so that all the cabing is hidden, nothing shows, nothing is plugged into the master socket.

Do the new FTTC master sockets offer IDC points for data and voice?

I think it is, but I could be confused.

I already had a filtered RJ11 cable of cat 5e standard in my walls..

I just had the engineer install at the master & then when he left I connected my own rj11 cable and had the router where I wanted it.

Works a treat & stats wise cannot tell the difference.

Your are right, but in this case I am referring to Post Filter voice and have edited above.
