So my options are I re-wire this myself but from what has been said this is really a "no no" and I should get BT out to do the job properly :-\
Now that you know that you have a real master on Line 2, you are permitted to touch anything on your side from the NTE5 faceplace inclusive onwards incl. the R slave socket and you may follow that linked page.

if you can arrange that a single pair blue/white on 2/5 go from the distant NTE5 to the right hand socket with the orange disconnected and no other wires on the back of the NTE5 faceplate (and nothing plugged into its face) then you'll be close to as good as you can get it, providing nothing is tee'd off en route from master to remote.

Okay so all done now and working first time, noted so far an additional 0.2MB/s of consistent download bandwidth but its early days I guess.

Thanks all for your help and for info the model number of the 2nd socket confusing me was a VJU2/3A, the wire bundle was obscuring the tag previously.

Cheers all,

Kelvin
