Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet - Wifi - Schools system.

My wife has just acquired a Galaxy Note 10.1. All has gone very well in setting it up to do just what she wants at home, particularly re connecting it to WIFI etc.

At school they do have a wireless network, which staff Ipads can connect to. Connecting an Android device though it seems is impossible.

Unfortunately the explanation I am getting is getting to me second hand, but I gather it is all to do with their safe internet policy and having to both connect to an access point possibly with a key and a proxy server with a username and password.

The tech department, say they have never managed to connect an Android device and that they can not find or there is no tab in the WIFI setting to allow them to set up the username and password.

All I actually know about their system is that it is based on Windows servers.

Does anybody have any helpful suggestions as to where I should look on the Galaxy to find these settings, or of an APP which I could download which might allow the problem to be solved. The requirement would be to work with their security, not to bypass it.

Thank you very much for those links, I will have a look at the device when she comes home The slight snag regarding the final link is that it states it is for the browser only and does not effect the other apps functions of the phone. Ideally it would be nice to get everything working, e.g. mail / calender etc, she does not actually spend much time browsing, though I appreciate with a net based system such as Google, they are all available through the browser.

Thank you also for the hint about what to search for in Google, my attempts did not reveal a great deal except sales for new machines. The one thing I did find mentioned EAP and PEAP, which I see is also there, so that is what I may target.

I think there are proxy management apps - depends what the proxiy does (if indeed it is one). If she has a work laptop or one set up for school you could interrogate its settings.

Proxydroid is one, but it needs root access. http://www.android-proxy.com/ didn't seem to take off.

Presumably they are indeed using authenticated proxies. Many systems aren't that keen on the MS way of doing authenticated proxy - wouldn't be surprised if some/all flavours of android don't like the MS system.

We use the same system at work and there are some devices/apps that the only way we can get them to work is give them a static IP that is allowed directly out of the firewall and therefore not use the authenticated proxy.

Afraid I can't specifically help on the android fix as I had a look on my Samsung Tab with ICS and whilst I can set a proxy for the WiFi network it doesn't allow username/password entry.

Thank you for that. I confess that I am not actually sure what they use as I am getting all 2nd hand, and I am sure plenty is lost in the simplified translation and resulting explanation to me.

I am a little reluctant to mess around with static IPs as their network uses a different numbering system to mine, but if they are on different connections that may not matter. At any rate I think it is some firewall or filtering software that is to blame and the reaction to putting an extra entry in that so far has not been great. (Having said that there was little point if they were unable to get it to connect in the first place).

I have sent through what looks like a very useful link from the messages above and await to hear the result, which will also depend on her having time to check her emails and the tech guy having time to experiment a little, which he is normally very quick about.

School, probably running a captive portal. Try and find out what the system is. They might be able to update it.

The genuinely might not have the infrastructure/technology to allow these devices to be connected to the internet without appropriate security.

Will do. It may well be the case that they are lacking something and that it is expensive to put in place. With the plethora of android devices about, though it is something that I suspect they should be doing sooner rather than later. At the moment the response is get an Ipad. While Ipads are very good for education, they are not really net workable and expensive and importantly they do not run flash. They are fast, sleek, nice to look at and great for various sorts off media. The Galaxy note I think is the better deal certainly for what my wife needs. For learning packages there are a host of rather cheaper tablets on the market.
