IPv6 Virgin...help setting up please?

Hi folks, my ISP is running a trial of IPv6 and has provided me with some information for connection.

I am a total n00b when it comes to IPv6 and was hoping I could manually enter the required information into my Apple Airport Extreme (7.6.4 firmware) but I am having a bit of trouble figuring out what goes where.

This is an example of the information I have been provided...

IPv6 Address 2001:1234:5678:1234::/56
PTP Address 2001:1234:5600:5678::/64
Size 56

These are the sections I need to complete for manual configuration...

IPv6 WAN Address
IPv6 Default Route
Remote IPv4 Address
IPv6 Delegated Prefix
IPv6 LAN Address

I have tried Automatic Configuration but I get an "IPv6 Relay Error".

Would anyone have experience of setting this up or know if it's even possible to do so with this router?

I don't use that router, but it looks as if you're in IPv6 tunnel mode and the settings you list are for a tunnel. There's no remote IPv4 address for native IPv6 operation.

You want to be in IPv6 router mode - I believe the Airport Extreme has a separate IPv6 mode option where you set this. Once you set that correctly, the chances are that your Airport Extreme will auto-configure itself correctly. If it doesn't, come back and post the settings you are being asked for.

The Airport Extreme doesn't support native IPv6:

Bit of a major FAIL on Apple's part, it's not a cheap router

It's (partly} why mine went back in it's box some time ago- general lack of configurability and only 3 LAN ports were the main reasons.

(Though mine is an early one)

More the other way round really- their information is no use to you

I can't remember how I set it up, but I did use the AEX with a 6to4 tunnel- it has its own built-in. I think I just enabled it using Airport Utility and it did the rest. Good thing it did- even now my sum total of IPv6 knowledge is that it's got a much bigger address space than IPv4 and doesn't need NAT

Istr it allows you to talk IPv6 to most dual-stack sites, though there were (are?) a few that don't like tunnels for some reason.

I tried Auto and did get an IPv6 IP but it didn't match anything my ISP had provided and some sites said I wasn't IPv6 as you mention.

I have read conflicting information on the 6th Gen AEBS (The new tower shaped one) and if it supports native IPv6 or not, the Wiki and some reviews say it does but a user on the Apple forum says it doesn't.

Am I right in thinking that for my current hardware my ISP would have to support "tunnel" mode instead of "native" IPv6?

Can't help on any of that I'm afraid- I simply don't know.

TBH I don't think the AEX is good value for money- I use an Asus RT-66NU, and very pleased with it. £100 from Amazon.

The Billion 7800DLX looks good too, but I haven't used one myself. Dearer than the Asus, but cheaper than the AEX!

I am drawn towards the Apple product as I also use Time Machine on a 2TB HD connected via USB.

Is that a web based GUI or an app the ASUS uses? Is this the one that has a custom firmware you can use?
