Problems with fibre modem?

Had my fibre install with plusnet today, had a few issues maybe non related.

First was the internet light was red even 4 hours after install so I rang Plusnet who manually activated it and it worked.

Second problem was I could not get ethernet to work on the Plusnet router, or do a direct PPPOE connection to pc from the modem to my laptop or desktop(and tried different cables)

Eventually a reboot of the modem fixed the problem and all was fine till a few hours later I decided to move the cable under the carpet and in corners so out of the way instead of straight across the carpet above it and all of the sudden pc keeps reporting cable unplugged , I seemed to sort this with a dab of WD40 and now that issue is gone but still when wired is plugged in I have issues with things like web pages not loading.

I put this here as I think its a modem issue not a plusnet issue or at most its both a modem issue and plusnet router issue.

Seems to be ip address problems.

EDIT whilst I am here does anyone know how to make the pc recognise the wired and wireless connection as same name as renamed the plusnet connection to one of my own choice but ethernet shows plusnetwirelessxxxxxx on it still, I know I can change it in network settings but as far as the pc is concerned its 2 different networks and lists them as such.

Hmm!

Sort this out first. Check with a new cable.

This doesn't make any sense. In Windows you can name the network adapters. Where are you seeing this????
Rename the adapters sensible names i.e. Ethernet and Wireless. Make sure they are set as home network NOT public. ENSURE you are connecting to the right wireless network.

It sounds like something is "non standard" about this configuration, is there anything else we should be aware of?

What is your modem/router?

Please can you go into Command Prompt and type

ipconfig /all

And post the output of it here for us to review??

Well first I would like to mention you are getting confused with what I mean, lets say routers default wireless SSID is "plusnetrouter" then the first time you connect to that by wireless, windows will rename the network to "plusnetrouter" on windows, it will still show wireless connection 1 above the network name in the adapter page.

What normally happens on all of the different windows 7 pcs I have owned or used in my life is if you have both ethernet and wireless connected to a router, the ethernet is default called "network" but as soon as you connect via wireless it auto changes to the same name as the wireless i.e "plusnetrouter"

The problem here is I renamed the SSID to a name I want lets say "johnsmith" in the past whenever I have renamed the wireless network from the router so it transmits that new name and then click on it and put password in the ethernet network then renames itself to the same as the new wireless name(assuming its the same network) So network and sharing centre shows them as 1 network connected by both, when now the ethernet just calls itself "plusnetrouter" still despite wireless having new name, and when you rename the wired network mantually to match the wireless it sees them as 2 different networks with same name.

Does that make sense now?

If it also isnt clear I have the Openreach modem plugged into the plusnet Tecnhicolor router by its designated ethernet slot then a ethernet cable running from back of plusnet router to desktop.

I already tried different cables earlier.

Could you post an ipconfig /all please? This will help me understand why you are seeing plusnetrouter thing, because the SSID shouldn't influence that in Windows.

Please could you try running a continual ping to say, 8.8.8.8

in command prompt, type ping 8.8.8.8 -n 500

This will ping google 500 times, when it finishes it will give you a packetloss result, please post here.

Please also try DISABLING wireless while you are plugged in via ethernet cable and check to see if things get any better.

You could well be right the fibre modem is faulty the trouble is with ISPs and faults it is often a blame game and you need to do your bit of ruling internal causes out to get them to fix problems in a timely manner.

With wireless disabled and running that 500 times it said 0% loss minimum 25ms, max 29ms average 25ms

When I say pages dont load, what I actually meant was they load but there is lag

Did you remove the host name? If so, that's OK. If you didn't, then it looks like your PC is missing a host name somehow and that will probably be why Windows is showing weird things for the net adapters. There could be something else at play here but in the first instance try setting a PC name, and see what happens.

It could be that something else is corrupted in the networking stack.. Could you post a screenshot maybe of where you are seeing the separate networks thing?

Going back to your OP are you saying things are ok via wireless but not via ethernet? If so, then try changing that cable and also try into a different port on back of router (if available), there could be a dodgy NIC on it.

Could you try a

ping fe80::9e97:26ff:fe96:4204%13



do you get a response? Presume techicolour router is advertising itsself via IPv6, but I don't have any first hand experience of them so would like to rule that out.

Suppose next thing to do is a thinkbroadband speedtest, see what speed you are getting.

Do webpages load laggy the first time and then subsequent times OK?

Have to ask - was the router supplied by plusnet preconfigured or have you made any adjustments to it?

Yes I removed that name from it when copy and pasting, as for the webpages that issue has only occured in the last hour or so, it was fine all day till then now its quite often it pauses for a few seconds then loads instantly, I can refresh it or something and its instant, this can be for google searches too so its not a page full of pictures or something.

It is a bit high for fibre I suppose but to me it seems stable enough? Especially for 500 pings..
