Home network speed test

For the first time since setting up my wired gigabit home network, I did a speed test, using Totusoft LAN Speed Test between a Windows 10 PC running the test server and a MACBook Air and got the following test results:

The first result was using a 20MB test data size, the last two with a 1024MB data size. Do the above figures seem about right for a cat5e wired ethernet network?

I'm wondering why there's the variation between the first result and the other two.

Are you sure the MBA is wired, not wireless?

Are those speeds network speeds or hardware? I suspect they are the latter - given the header of Write Speed and are potentially a limitation of the MacBook. The difference is due to start up and end sequences.

Can you get the Win10 version of task manager running and monitor the network? A GB file should transfer in around 8 seconds whilst the hardware will take 12 seconds to write. Try that and see - and repeat with a 2GB file -16 seconds to transfer and 24 to write. You will also be able to see the data rate (approx) is it close to 1Gbps or 700Mbps?

Read the headings - Write and Read speed; to me they refer to the disk drive, cache, or DRAM not network!

they equate
writing to upload, and reading to download.
-which as I said just seems to be wrong.

The MacBook Air had the Apple Gigabit thunderbolt adapter plugged it and the WiFi switched off.
