Re: Myself and neighbours accessing each other's routers??!!

No, as I'm connected to my Router's main SSID (the one I made up) not the secondary one for BT customers who are roaming.

Just randomly managed to connect to my Home Hub 5. All my neighbours devices are connected to it again via ethernet frown

Err, that would require a lot of long leads .......

Take a screenshot of what you are seeing.

Park the image somewhere like DropBox or a photo site and post a link so we can see what is going on.

Either they have sneaked a cable in or it is a HomePlug issue.

You need to talk to your neighbours and work with them to isolate both sets of HomePlugs and WiFi. If they have no technical understanding - do it for them.

Also, is it possible to ban specific MAC addresses from the HH5? Some routers have that capability - if so, bar all of your neighbours from your hub and likewise, bar all of yours from theirs.

Yep, that looks like a home plug wi-fi extender problem, maybe you should try and reset your home plugs and sync them again.

It's the powerline adapters, they are horrible things.

Effectively, thanks to the powerline adapters, you have an ethernet cable between your Homehub and his.

When anyone connects via ethernet, or wireless, or powerline, to either homehub, the device requests an IP address.

Given that there are two DHCP servers (the homehubs) on this one connected network, it's pot luck which one gives out the IP address. So, you can connect to your wireless, and get an IP from his router, or vice versa.

The router's "connected devices" page is not live, it is a list of devices to which it has given IP addresses. If these devices are disconnected, they won't immediately vanish from this list all the time - although wireless devices might - so you can't use this as 100% accurate.

Note that it says his iPhone is connected via ethernet. Obviously this is not the case, it is connected to HIS router's SSID, but YOUR router gave it an IP via DHCP. As far as your router is concerned, this connection came via the ethernet port so that's where it's listed.

The solution is to remove the homeplugs, and burn them on a bonfire. If you really like them, perhaps change the encryption on them.

If you unplug the homeplugs, don't expect all his stuff to vanish from the router's list immediately.

You do know that you'd need a full hard reset of the Hub to completely wipe it's memory of what has been previously connected .....

I suppose on the positive side, such a feature might make "plausible deniability" a rather more likely to succeed in legal cases such as copyright infringement (or worse).

However, I'd agree. Allowing automatic sharing of password information without the owners explicit authorisation is shocking and, I'd have thought, possibly illegal.

As it says in the screenshot, Access Control 'disabled'. Enable it and configure what YOU want to connect to YOUR router. Blacklist everything else, job done. It really is that simple to cure.
