Re: Modem Advice for new TalkTalk connection

Rebooting your Asus router won't have any effect on the Draytek modem, so reboot your Asus as often as you like. Assuming you don't have any line issues I recommend you get DLM switched off (you can then re-boot the Draytek 130 as often as you like without worrying about the DLM kicking in) and also ask TT to put you on a 6db fastpath profile, aka "24FSNR6". You can request this via the TT forums.

@MHC,

The cable run is pretty free 'n clear there is a consumer unit and hard-wired alarm panel in the same area but nothing else that should impact the signal quality. The wiring is about ten years old and compliant with BS7671-2001-2004 sixteenth edition (mixed voltage separation etc.).

Thanks for the heads up on Router Stats Light I will check that out for sure. I can't remember what the schedule is but I think it's currently rebooting around 4am on a Sunday. I will investigate once things are in motion.

The router cycling method makes sense to me so I will keep that in mind.

Cheers for all the info.

@baby_frogmella,

That's good to know I had read the 130 specs. earlier and it indicates that the router provides the modem with the login credentials etc. I had assumed that that may impact the modem in some way so it's good to know it's not an issue. I have the odd occasion when I need to mess with the router which often entails multiple reboots so this info is very useful to know thanks.

If switching off DLM is an option I shall disable it for everyday use for sure.

I haven't investigated the TT forums yet but I will look into that.

Humm cans of geeky worms keep opening up.

I have no idea what a 6db fastpath profile is or what the benefits of it are? Further reading required just when I thought I was on the home straight.

Thanks for all the great input folks it's much appreciated!

EDIT:
I'm up to speed with the 6db fastpath now thanks for the heads up.

The CU itself will not cause an issue - just the connected cabling if you have a noisy device that is pushing noise down the cables.

The alarm panel may cause problems if it is too close - the PSUs are often not of the best quality and the electronics themselves may also be a source of noise. It will be a case of check it out and if you can fully power down the alrm including teh battery back-up you can compare SNR figures before and after.

My master sits 100mm above my alarm control box, the master to modem cable passed even closer and I have no issues. It is down to te brand in use and age of the panel.

All the appliances are pretty modern and I haven't noticed any obvious noise related issues so far, fingers crossed that it doesn't become an issue. Oh I have a commercial espresso machine which may be a bit dirty. The pumps not great and when the solenoid kicks there could be a bit of noise? On the bright side it's not on 24/7 and the pump and solenoid are intermittent when running. I may need to keep an eye on that beast.

The alarm panel is about 4.5' away from the incoming phone socket, ten years old and it's not a bad quality unit - I have a feeling it needs a new battery. Humm there's a chance the phone line may run 1.5' above and over the panel? With a bit of luck it will play nice with the BB.

Should be fine, just get Router Stats Lite installed http://www.vwlowen.co.uk/internet/files.htm#routerst... and look at what is happening

My reset was probably not too smart and a little hasty.

I think I was a little too quick to judge the supplied HG633 router as it has performed well enough with the limited testing done so far. Not tried anything on 5GHz just yet though.

One annoying thing is the fact that I can't seem to find a router selection that functions with RouterStats_Lite. Tried the Huawei Generic Telnet, everything with talktalk in the name and the user defined option. Nada, Zilch 'n Nowt. I tried searching for an answer which has been fruitless so far...off to do some more digging.

I haven't put in the "24FSNR6" request as that's probably best done after the new router goes in I'm guessing?

Ran a speed test following the reboot - P 28 D 12.8 U 0.71

EDIT: What the hell are they thinking supplying a router with 10/100 post these days?

Do TT restrict Primary and Secondary DNS Server edits or is that hidden away somewhere?

You should be able to request 24FSNR6 profile now via the TT forums, no need to wait any longer. You'll be on a 12db SNR margin (TT default), once this is changed to 6db you should gain a few extra meg. If the router allows you to enter your own DNS servers, TT support this as i'm successfully using Google DNS (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4) on TT.

Thanks for the speedy reply baby_frogmella, I'm suffering a little from sleep deprivation so I'm trying to chill amidst all the excitement and the overwhelming temptation to fiddle and explore, which may not be the smartest move right now.

The place that looked obvious for a DNS Server change is under Internet > Internet Connection > Internet_ADSL [Edit]. But there is no way to alter the defaults from that page although they are displayed.

Do I need the account info to join and request the "24FSNR6" I did a brief recce after you mentioned it before but I can't say I noticed any sort of format to the request. As it's a dynamic IP I guess they don't use that to target the account so I must need to do something to identify the connection?

Ah I see how they target the account from the forum profile now! I will get on the case asap. Cheers.

In can't fine anywhere in the supplied router that allows the DNS to be changed...it's not a big deal I can live with the TT DNS service for a couple of days.

EDIT:

Can't find the magic search term to find the answer to the compatibility for the HG633 and Router_Stats lite or Router Stats?

This is the stats page from the routers firmware:

Internet Connection

DSL synchronization status: Up

Connection status: Showtime

WAN IP Address: 92.xxx.xxx.xxx

Primary DNS Server: 78.151.235.3

Secondary DNS Server: 78.151.235.132

Line Quality

Upstream line rate (kbit/s): 824

Downstream line rate (kbit/s): 14656

Upstream noise safety coefficient (dB): 15.3

Downstream noise safety coefficient (dB): 15.1

Upstream interleave depth: 2

Downstream interleave depth: 64

Line standard: ADSL2+

Upstream line attenuation (dB): 11.2

Downstream line attenuation (dB): 8.7

Upstream output power (dBm): 9.9

Downstream output power (dBm): 10.9

Channel type: Interleaved

DSL up-time: 0 days 5 hours 45 minutes 59 seconds

Request in for the 24FSNR6 sync profile.

TT don't seem to provide direct access to firmware for the router? They seem to think it's acceptable to simply offer a push service rather than allow people to make their own decisions. They will struggle to push anything to the N66U once it takes up its rightful position.

I read a couple of reviews for the HG633 and they were putting it on a par or above the BT Home Hub 5, which I can't see personally from my experience with various friends HH5's. The HH5 has Gigabit ports that should have scored a few favourable points, and the HG633 isn't future proof due its 10/100 limitation which should have knocked a few points off any scoring system.

I have had good experiences for the most part with the Huawei mobile mifi routers and dongles - of which I had many of over the past 9 or 10 years.
