Unifi Dream Machine Pro and Cloud Subscription?

[link to this post]

Hi All

I currently have a full Unifi Netork with the controller hosted on an AWS server which we pay for. If I upgrade from our USG Pro 4 to the USG Dream Machine Pro, am i correct in understanding that i can cancel our controller subscription on AWS as the Dream Machine is the controller and accessible via the UBNT website? The upgrade should then be very low cost!

TIA

Felix

I think so - have you asked on the UniFi forums though?

Personally I would rather continue to self-host UniFi (VPS such as Linode, Digital Ocean or others using an Ubuntu or Debian image) than have all dependencies on the UDM.
Some people have it running locally on a NAS.

As long as you have a recent backup of the database, both current and at least one previous version you should be ok.

But then I prefer EdgeRouter or pfSense having seen the USG feedback particularly around adding any custom config.
So for me that's a factor for where UniFi sits.

My Ubiquiti controllers run on local hardware (Cloud Key G2 Plus).

If you ensure your AWS hosted controller config is correctly sync'd to the UI account, then when you setup the controller locally on the Dream Machine, all the devices and settings should come across when you sync back to your UI account with the same creds...

BTW - Did you experience the UI cloud outage yesterday?

Edit- ooops! no follow the site export process (before you blow away the AWS!):

Thank you both. I haven't asked the forums yet but that's an idea. I have the AWS synced up to my UI account already so can access it from there and I would hope that continues...

I want to change to their hosting as it just makes sense in my opinion if I can give up maintenence and upgrades... We don't run anything so mission critical that a controller outage would be a huge issue.

I can't see how Ubiquiti are planning to monetise this unless they allow for this in the hardware sales? Their hosting used to be very pricey!

Thanks

No worries. If you follow the guide at the link above, it’s easy enough to create the backup file (will be like something like 6.0.45.unf) and then import the file to the new controller.

If you’re self hosting the controller on your own hardware, just enable remote access (enable SSH too) on the controller config and you should be able to access it from any other internet connected device using your UI single sign on creds. You don’t need to necessarily host the controller itself with Ubiquiti, you just need a UI account if that makes sense.
