SFP/SFP+

[link to this post]

I need to connect a UDMPro to a Unifi USW-24 switch currently it uses a port on each of them and I would like to free one up. The UDM-Pro has a 10Gb SFP+ whereas the switch is only 1Gb SFP. The distance is only 1-2m so fibre not needed.

Can I use an SFP+ Direct Attach cable betweeen the ports allowing a 1Gb connection? Or are there incmopatibilities?

OR DO I need to use the UF-RJ45-1G modules and a Cat5e/6 link?

The former would be preferable.

You’d probably be OK using an SFP gigabit class DAC to link them as the SFP+ port is generally backwards compatible and will take an SFP class pluggable.

I don’t think an SFP+ DAC will work with your SFP cage in your USE-24 switch because it will present as a 10Gbps interface only. It won’t drop back to SFP / 1Gbps.

You may need to use 2 regular optical SFP modules and a short fibre patch lead.

Buy a new USW Pro 24 as it has SFP+ laugh laugh laugh

A single RJ45 SFP in USW port 25 will do what you want or just get the SFP 1G MM pair and a fibre patch between Pro port 11 (LAN) and USW port 25 or a SFP DAC (I think UI only do these as SFP+) as Pheasant suggested.

Thanks both ....

I'll do you a deal ... you buy the Pro-24 and I'll do a swap with you!

Looks as though teh RJ45-SFP is the only solution .... I cannot find a 1G DAC anywhere.

Yeah. I’ve got a couple of SFP / 1 GbE DACs but they are very hard to find new now.

Going the alternative with RJ45 SFP would work, but may work out slightly more expensive than two optical SFPs and a short fibre patch lead.

As there is no link negotiation on a DAC you have to force the SFP+ port speed to 1Gb, see https://help.ui.com/hc/en-us/articles/212561258-UniF...

That is what I have been looking for .... just knowing where to find it!

Looks as though I can use either a 1m UDC-1 or 0.5m UC-DAC-SFP+ and force/define the port to 1Gbps.

With 1G SFPs as cheap as they are, that's what I'd go for.

fs.com: 1000BASE-LX/LH SFP modules are £6.20 each. And the nice thing about this particular standard is that it works over both single-mode and multi-mode patch cables. (However, you should always choose single-mode: it's what all telcos use, whereas multi-mode is legacy only)

Give it a go MHC. If the SFP+ DAC can auto negotiate back to 1 GbE then you’re fine. Magic smoke won’t ensue - just won’t work. You can always return it

lol, not sure I'm getting the best end of the deal there laugh

Just looking at my controller and the negotiation speed is just a pull down in the settings...turns out I can set my WAN port to 10mbps HDX......who would have thought that was still required??
