silence

[link to this post]

I have just moved my NAs to the cupboard under the stairs, silence I have here, well almost, still have the fan of the computer, not as bad as the NAS.,
It was not too bad with two hard drives in, but get four in and it is a bit loud.

A bit of a mess in there at the moment, it is standing on a table with cables dangling, but after Christmas I will redo the network, I have a couple of weeks off, one in January and one in February. I also have to get a decent Ethernet cable as the one i am using is pretty old and the clips that hold it in are broken, but it will be fine for a few weeks. I am thinking of moving the whole network in the cupboard, apart from the router, drill a hole in the cupboard wall
I would like to do a decent network as at the moment, it is a bit of a mess, with three switches to connect the whole thing together, it works fine, but just a mess. If this was my own house and I had the money, I would put network points in all the rooms.

All my kit lives under the stairs. Don't really like anything else on view. Keeps it all in one place. Just watch the airflow, especially in summer, once you start to get quite a bit of gear into a relatively small space - things can start to get a little warm wink

Similarly, when I built my extension I created a small loft specifically for the "comms". It started with an ISDN plus PSTN feed, which slowly migrated through ADSL + 2xPSTN, VDSL and FTTP.

It has plenty of sockets - 15 in just over 2 sq metres plus an FCU. The alarm panel with expander and comms module are there, ONT (previously modem and hub), router, switch some PoE supplies, patch panel and a few more bits. Supplied with a dedicated RCBO protected circuit.

When I had a Cisco/Linksys switch, it would get warm in there and I bored a 50mm vent with a small fan to push air out. Now, with Ubiquiti UDM-Pro, 24 port switch and three PoE injectors it is significantly cooler and te fan not needed, also quieter as the switch is fanless. Next move, install the NVR drive and possibly at long last a NAS!

It is not too small, so should be ok, not that there is much equipment, it is just Hue hubs, thermostat hub and switch. I will keep the router outside the cupboard as it may block the signal.

I keep my NASs, router, VOIP/DECT telephone equipment and some Raspberry PIs in them attic as that is where my original overhead telephone line entered the house. So far (touch wood) I have not had a problem with the equipment getting to hot or to cold.

I thought of that, but no power up there and while it would not take much to get power up there, as I get older the thought of climbing up there if anything goes wrong puts me off. Also, the router would still have to stay downstairs as that is where the phone line comes in. even if I went for FTTP, it would still come in downstairs
