Guest LAN port

[link to this post]

I would like to have a guest LAN port, like the guest Wi-Fi facility I have on my router which restricts access only to the Internet and not the rest of my home LAN.

I want to keep my smart TV separate for security purposes. And I want to connect it via LAN cable, not Wi-Fi.

I have a RT-AC66U B1 router with stock Asus software connected to BT FTTP. Is it possible to do with/adding to current set up or do I need another router - in which case what's the recommendation on a budget please?

Apologies if I missed an answer to this when I searched.

You'll need a router/switch that supports VLAN to create an isolated network that can be assigned to a particular port(s).

Not sure your current router will support that using stock firmware.

Neither does the Merlin recompile (asuswrt-merlin.net). but Merlin lets you run custom scripts, and someone has written one. A bit complex. https://gist.github.com/Jimmy-Z/6120988090b9696c4203...

Simplist option is to use the WiFi guest network, and if the TV doesn't support WiFi get a WiFi to Ethernet adaptor to connect the TV to the guest WiFi, such as this on Amazon:

Yep agreed the guest WiFi network would be the doddle to setup, but if OP insists on a fully wired connection, I think realistically its new router time.

Thanks for all your replies.

I do want a wired connection and also expand to IoT which are also wired.

So any suggestions for replacement routers please?

That would be my choice too. A small fanless PC and pfSense.

One of these for example, though there are plenty of other options.

Turn the ASUS into a wireless access point only.

I have a similar, though older, fanless PC running pfSense. My wifi though is via three Unifi access points.

MikroTik (with a bit of a learning curve) for a small, efficient, off the shelf solution.

Alternatively if deploying on (existing? / low cost) Intel-based hardware either PfSense or OPNsense based solution.

Either of these will have oodles of performance (depending on spec.) and huge amounts of flexibility, but will require some patience and time to setup.

I'd avoid recently, and go with OPNsense.

and this is not the "fit and forget" of the ASUS.... I've not gone that route yet, but eventually will probably go OPNsense.
