e-bay madness

[link to this post]

A Ubiquiti UDM-SE appeared a week or so back with a low start price ... so I fiollowed it.

Yesterday, it sold for £480! Which is more than a new one with 2 year warranty - £399+VAT direct from UI and it can be bettered with UK distributors.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/374716647499

Why would anyone spend that much on an item with no warranty - apart from about a week to check and return?

Same story for most electronics items on the bay, they usually have the cheek to put in the ad x amount of manufacturers warranty remaining which is normally non-transferable.

Someone didn't do their homework and got carried away in a bidding war? Far from uncommon on eBay frown

Possibly or probably ... there were two bidders from early on who went to £440 & £470 (whhich is still too high) and then a new one, first bid with seconds to spare. Madness!

I've seen worse than that- back in the day I saw a Psion Organiser II go for over £120 once, usual price at the time was in the £30-£40 bracket. Most I ever paid was about £45, and that one came with a printer (which worked)!

Or it could just be money laundering. Something that's moderately expensive, but not high enough to raise too many suspicions.

Or shill bidding. Hardly seems worth either the risk or the faff for the money involved, especially after eBay take their cut. My money's still on bidding fever smile
