Switch Suggestions

[link to this post]

I'm trying to help a family member 500 miles away ... New house with "installed network" which seems to be a 12 port patch panel and a Zyxel router feeding four WAPs - so no connection to the PP.

Obviously a small switch is needed - probably 16 port but it must be 10" profile and probably unmanaged. (or possibly 24port)

Any recommendations please, at sensible prices!

I bought a Zyxel GS1900-24E a few years ago. It is partly managed as it has a web site where I can see what ports are in use. It would be even nicer if I could switch on power over ethernet for the devices (cameras) that need it.

My D-Link DGS-1024D has been without issues. Unmanaged, Gigabit, 24-port, fanless - silent, and not very expensive. They also do a 16-port DGS-1016D.

I use managed TP-Link but only 8 port versions and for the money they are fine. Maybe they do not need them but there have been no firmware updates in years and vulnerability scans have not detected anything at least.

Thanks for that (and also the suggestions from others). Unfortunately he is in Norway - to needs to purchase there.

Been through the various questions with him and he only wants an unmanaged switch with no PoE. The house was built with data cabling in place including locations for WAPs - with local inceiling power!

I have very good experience with Netgear switches: the low-end unmanaged ones are small, silent, in robust metal cases, and keenly priced. Plenty of sizes to choose from in terms of number of ports (5, 8, 16) and in compact desktop form-factors.

https://www.netgear.com/uk/business/wired/switches/u...

(although the difference in price for a managed "smart" switch is small, should you ever want to do things like VLANs, graphing the traffic through each port, or mirroring traffic for inspection)
