FTP upload speed

Not sure if this question fits into this section of the forum, but I'm not sure where else it should go...

I regularly upload (via ftp) files up to ~200Mb to a website I have hosted with GoDaddy. With my old BT connection of around 8Mb/s upload speed, filezilla reported a transfer rate of about 1.2MiB/s max.

Now I've FTTP with a measured > 900Mb/s upload speed according to speed tests, I'd expect this to be dramatically improved. But no, if I'm lucky I get around 2MiB/s according to filezilla.

I'm wondering if GoDaddy have some sort of ftp cap in place, however they claim they don't. Yet what I find is that initially, I can see speeds of 12-16MiB/s which then over a period of 10s or so gradually drops to the 1-2MiB/s value. Starting another ftp immediately after I get the slower speed, so something is 'remembering' the cap.

Anyone have any ideas what might cause this?

check under transfer, speed limits and see if thats enabled in filezilla

No limits set in Filezilla and also max connections set to 10.

Try another FTP service and see if it's any quicker. I wouldn't be surprised if some shared hosting from GoDaddy is stuck in 2004 in terms of their capacity.

GoDaddy will have I/O limits which may vary by type of hosting and plan, this article is from a few years ago but may still be accurate for their current shared hosting plans https://www.godaddy.com/resources/skills/web-hosting...

It appears to show a 10240 kb/s (kilobits per second) I/O limit which ignoring overheads is about 1.28MB/s, maybe their system allows brief bursts above that rate or it takes time for the client to adapt to the limit hence appearing to start off faster.

GoDaddy would probably suggest upgrading to a more expensive package which it doesn't appear would make any difference or a VPS, but if you really wanted better speed and quality of hosting you'd be better off looking elsewhere.

Godaddy is not the best place for hosting.......

Thanks, that would seem to agree with what I see, about 1.2-1.3Mb/s average over time. Anyone suggest a better hosting company - I need a few Gb of storage, ftp, SSL, email and Wordpress hosting? Ideally easy to setup, no heavy linux admin? Thanks.

I use Ionos for my web host. I have an unlimited space (although they do limit the number files that you can totally upload per contract) with unlimited email addresses for under £20 per month. Using FTP alone suggests being stuck in 2004, unless its actually SFTP.

Why's that then? Is there something better to use (note: security is not an issue here, everything on the site or transferred is public domain).
