Extending FTTC G.Fast connection

[link to this post]

Good Evening,

I currently have a residential G.Fast service from TalkTalk, which runs at up to 150Mbps as the cabinet is very close by. At present the cable enters my house into the living room which is where my Openreach Modem and Ubiquiti Router are situated, however I’d like to move them. The reason is that currently I cannot get a wired connection to either my home office (upstairs) or the TV on the opposite side of the room. The reason for the 1st issue is I don’t wanna multitool the walls, and I can’t get the wood floor up, nor can I afford to get someone to do it for me.

A friend suggested moving the telephone cable upstairs into the office, but I know Openreach can be funny about doing that. This got me thinking, what if I installed a data extension from the Openreach socket, to my office, via the outside of the property. I could use one of these. The question is, is it compatible with G.Fast?

Once that’s sorted I can run a Cat5e cable from the office to the living room via a conduit in the hall, but that’s another time.

Thanks in advance

CJT.

Currently on TalkTalk Fibre 150

Previously on NOW TV Broadband up to 38 Mbps, then BT Broadband up to 80Mbps, then Pluse8 Broadband up to 80 Mbps, then Hyperoptic 100Mbps.

It *ought* to be …. but G.Fast is the fussiest of them all. I don’t suppose you can draw any stats from the modem can you … so you could temporarily attach the new cable and see if there was some appreciable difference between the two sets of stats ?

The best bet would be to order a shift of NTE … but you mention that cost is a factor.

Do you have separate openreach modem and talk talk router , or it is an all in one device?

Leave the modem where it is and bring a data cable from there up to where you want the router to be located.

I agree. If you can run a vDSL/ADSL Extension from the current position to where you want it to move both modem and router, you can run an ethernet, leaving the modem where it is and move only the router. At least then if you get it wrong, it is all under your control and nothing to do with BT/Openreach.

I’ve not attempted to get any stats from OR Modem tbh. I can check what model it is once I’m back home.

I checked with TT and they charge £128.40 for a lift/shift. So if I can I’d prefer to avoid that.

I do have a separate modem and TT router. I no longer use the TT router but I still have it.

Ah that sounds like an idea. It would have to run externally.

Am I right in thinking, get two RJ45 faceplates and surface mount boxes, run external grade CAT5e or 6 cable between the two and just connect the output of the Modem into the downstairs outlet and a patch cable from the upstairs one into the router?

That will do it. Best to leave the gfast modem where it is. As stated, it's a very fickle technology so best not to do anything to disturb it.

Instead of standard face plates and back boxes, have a look at using a pair of these:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07ZVP39GQ/

They will take Cat5e/6 or screened Cat6 - do not require an insertion tool and overall are quite small. I have used quite a few.

Or if you want full faceplates te same brand has: https://www.amazon.co.uk/kwmobile-Cat6a-RJ45-Wall-Pl...
