Home BT network question

[link to this post]

I have a BT internet connection and have been cleaning up some of the cabling from the old home owner. He had a some wires coming out going to other areas of the house. They aren’t used now and have been unplugged, my question is can I just cut through these wires? Not sure if there’s enough current to cause any issues or is there another way to remove them? Opening the box up all the wiring seems connected and I don’t want to interrupt my broadband. I’ve attached pictures for reference.

Here’s a picture for reference:

With four cables going in ….. you need to be very cautious.

For starters, do you know where feed cable comes from ?

For more advice, pictures showing the socket with the face plate removed, and another with the NTE removed, showing all the wiring inside …. Please be careful, I suspect it’s a rats nest of wires in there.

Received a letter just the other day ..

If the aim is not to interrupt internet, you are safer disconnecting the cables inside the box, than cutting them. If you cut the cables, you risk forcing cores together.

Sorry for the slow reply, was busy at work ….

One of those black cables is feed to the NTE. Follow the blue/white pair terminated on the rear of the NTE to identify which. The other black sheathed cable is nasty ‘alarm’ wire … so may feed to where an alarm once was, the two white sheathed cables are extensions also.

Your initial photo has the two black cables marked … maybe as those you wish to disconnect ? One can, one cannot be.

Also requested was the picture with just the faceplate removed, so we can see for sure how the blue and white pairs are connected and can tell which pair should be disconnected. Is this the point where you are going to take your internet connection?
