There is a move to use higher frequencies to allow improved speeds in FTTC.
Currently VDSL2 is limited in the ANFP to 40Mbps in the UK. The change, which needs to be ratified by NICC, will allow much higher speeds. There's life in the old copper yet!

Is this going to help the distance related threshold or is it going to benifit those closest to the cabinet if ratified?
I would imagine thoses closest but would be nice to be wrong and see more people being able to benifit from the faster speeds.

Longer lines will not benefit - beyond about 1.6km from the cabinet depending on quality of copper line

How are things going with your SLU in Rutland?
The ICS fibre project in Selling is in a sorry state! Still not a single customer connected yet and they have released the pricing. £35 per month gets you 20Mbps symmetric but there is a usage cap of just 10GB per month with each additional GB costing £3.50

BT say they will offer 80meg but wiki states use of 17mhz couldl give 100meg - what speeds do you think this could in theory- and what speeds will you be offering?
Also what do you think are the chances they will raise to 30mhz as per the fastest vdsl profiles?
Will these changes make any difference to the block on use of vdsl from teh exchange?

Be wary of the figures bandied about: Some of the highest are the absolute best capabilities, without taking any real life considerations into account - particularly crosstalk from the neighbouring lines.

No there is basically no info on the net coz Bill Mabey doesn't even have a clue what the net is! It's a very sad state of affairs.
ICS don't have a website.

We've gone off topic but interesting none the less since we also bid to offer services in Selling and lost out to ICS.
Have they been paid any public money yet?
Aren't they suposed to have an open access network under EU state aid rules?
Why have no customers been connected?

Use of VDSL from the exchange would need a separate application to NICC. There is no technical reason as to why it could not be used now - the only "risk" to the operator is if a PCP is built between the exchange and end users - they would have to revert back to ADSL2+
For now we find that ADSL2+ bonding gives better speeds than VDSL so no real demand for it

You said before ( here) that you were looking into exchange based VDSL for EO lines... did anything ever come of it?

No we have not seen sufficient demand to follow it up. We have some customers using bonded ADSL2+ (48/2) and those that want higher upload can use EFM (5/5 per line).
Perhaps if/when VDSL2 is allowed up to 100Mbps it will be worth pursuing for EO lines. We have no experience of getting something like that through NICC - they may want to see significant evidence of demand and justification before agreeing to it.
