Re: Virgin Media horrible ping / jitter compared to O/R

Their move to DOCSIS 3.1 and additional upstream channels ought to make a difference, for some folks, especially in upload performance.

Otherwise in the fullness of time the transformation to XGS-PON will bring them into line with their competitors, especially for outright and consistent latency and sub-par upload speeds. Although that could be at least 5 and if not closer to 10 years away for the bulk of existing subscribers.

As it stands, in the areas they've rolled out RFoG it hasn't made any difference, so I'll remain highly doubtful anything they do will improve things for now - especially as it's terrible for actual Ethernet services too.

To be fair RFoG isn’t particularly a magic bullet - it’s extending the optical side of network to the customer (which has benefits over aged local coaxial / amplifier / multi-tap infrastructure) but otherwise the same version of DOCSIS as the coaxial served areas, so wouldn’t necessarily see any benefit from additional channels etc in D3.1.

Were you able to get out of this, @bdav?

If not, and you're still using the Hub 3 router, I would see if you can request a Hub 4 router swap.

The Hub 4 router resolved a lot of the issues I had, some similar to what you mention.

I don't know if that was just coincidence, or because the Hub 4 supports DOCSIS 3.1.

Had the Hub 4 since some point last year, and been flawless, which then resulted in me upgrading to the Gig1 service when contract ended.

Worth a try, if leaving the contract early is not an option they're willing to explore.

Hub 5 has since come out, but I have no experience with it.
