Anyone know what is happening at Trunk Networks/No One?

[link to this post]

Trunk Networks' website (https://www.trunknetworks.com/) has been down for a while, but No One's seems to be working normally. The latest information for Trunk Networks at Companies House (https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/SC351063/filing-history) is a document titled "Appointment of provisional liquidator in a winding-up by the court".

Anyone know what is going on and what it means for No One?

I just decided to quit Virgin for them (in Cambridge via CityFibre) since they are one of a few providers who are not on the "annual CPI+3.9%" racket, which is surely going to hit the fan next Mar/Apr.

There were a couple of others (Giganet & Zen from memory), but I kind of liked No-one's material better. They were also fixing price for 2 years at what seemed reasonable (competitive, but enough for them to make a margin).

Anyway, I have now spoken with the Director, Darren Elsom (having emailed the company to ask them what on earth was going on).

Based on what he said, they are winding up Trunk Networks (due to loss of a major customer) which was a business oriented IT consultancy/Cloud provider, and are focussing on being a high quality residential broadband supplier via No One.

No One was originally set up as a subsidiary of Trunk (which itself is registered in Scotland for historic reasons!), so Darren needs to buy-out the "No One" asset off the Trunk liquidator (Darren says this is agreed) and NoOne can then operate as its own stand-alone business.

Ok - what do I take from this:
- on the plus side, they have been very responsive as a company to my queries. Darren is personable and I kind of believe him.

- on the minus side, they are clearly a start-up in this space, and there's a risk here, since I don't actually know him from Adam.

I've decided to stick with them, Gotta support the small guys, otherwise how are we going to stick it to BT/Virgin/Vodafone/Etc...

Hope this is useful.

Jim

It’s amazing how insightful and helpful first time posters can be!

But always caution too as we don’t ‘know’ them. Well as much as you can know anyone on an anonymous internet forum, but caveat emptor.

[no offence or hard feelings to Jim in Cambridge]

No offence taken smile I came to this forum because it was the only google-result that mentioned the winding up order on Trunk Networks, but it looks like a friendly enough place!

I could cancel the no-one order based on 14-day cooling off, but will see how it goes - new providers have to start somewhere.

Router turning up today, install next week...

Most definitely not a start up. I was using Trunk Networks a decade ago.
They have been selling Openreach services for many years including FTTP at a time when very few others were selling it.

They launched No One to focus on residential customers as Trunk Networks was indeed more of a business focused provider.

They are very experienced in this space. They were a brilliant company to deal with 9-10 years ago. It's a shame to see the parent company liquidated and wish No One every success.

I've spoken to Darren too, and he told me the same. I'm supposed to be joining tomorrow but I've had nothing about it from them. Their online chat just gives a "Sorry we missed you" message, whatever that means. I'd cancel, but I ordered early and the date has already been postponed once because of strike action, so I'm out of the 14 day period.

Ok - I am now successfully connected to No One internet also. Engineer turned up when expected, installation was straightforward and all is working fine. Speed is as advertised and better than the Virgin equivalent I was on. Early days, but so far so good!

All fine with me too. I didn't need an engineer as I was already on FTTP with BT, and it transferred overnight. I plugged in the router and it worked out of the box. VOIP started working a couple of hours later. Very happy so far.

Sorry to hijack your thread but trying to find any information about No One is pretty hard being a small ISP. Currently using Virgin, but my children are moaning about it. What are No One like as an ISP on city fibre?
Also would like to know if they throttle p2p, not a big downloader at all, but it would be nice to know on the odd occasion it's used that it's not throttled.

Agreed, they're a small ISP, but the guy who's running it has a reasonable pedigree in the industry.

As a provider, they've been fine so far (switched 1 month ago now).

I'm on the bottom end of the speed spectrum (150 symmetric) and have not had any issues - I don't need mega-speeds, and the latency seems fine. No material outages (a couple of "brown-outs", but that might have been my in-house network TBF - never long enough to have needed checking out) - this is better than Virgin was over the past couple of months.

Don't know whether they throttle anything - don't remember seeing this in their T&Cs, though I'm sure there's a "fair use" clause in there somewhere - they have a pretty responsive customer support setup, so I'd just ask there.

Thanks for the input Jim,

Yes they do seem pretty good for latency I'm getting 5ms on a ping test to a variety of places. I barely ever use any p2p now days, but I just don't like an ISP thinking it's ok to throttle a service I pay for especially when I'm a low bandwidth user. Will probably jump ship and try out a few other providers like Giganet.

Their customer service is very good indeed, cant fault that at all. speeds were good on speed tests sites but most downloads wouldn't hit anywhere near the same speeds and p2p definitely seemed managed. Latency for gaming was also pretty good too. On the whole a pretty decent ISP.
