I'm thinking of going with Post Office broadband, but use outlook to get my emails from googlemail. Does this mean i wouldn't be able to do this?

Thanks

You probably can. Most port restrictions regarding email are for port 25, which Google Mail does not use.

You can. My mother uses Googlemail over POP3 with Post Office - no problems.

It's a non-solution. The recipient sees it came from an unexpected sender and he can't see the reply addy without looking at the source.

I've recently from NTL to PO and was shocked to find I could no longer send mail from my third party mail server.

The first chap from tech support said it couldn't be done and referred me to an unavailable supervisor ...

The second chap from tech support however understood what the problem was and how to fix it !

It seems the solution is to use an IP address rather than smpt.mypostoffice.co.uk in the Outgoing Mail field. That IP address is 81.140.160.148

The PO chap didnt know why it worked or where 81.140.160.148 was but he said it works most of hte time ....

this has sorted it all out for me and I hope is of use to others out there.

I tried this but it didn't work for me.

After banging my head against the wall and hours of Googling I still didn't find a solution.

I tried ringing the Post Office and spoke to their inaptly named "Technical Department" who didn't understand the problem at all. 60 minutes of life talking to morons that I'll never get back.

Anyway I've just found a "kinda" solution here using Gmail:

how-to-use-gmail-as-your-smtp-server

In a nutshelll:
1. Set up a Gmail email account e.g. [email protected] with password "password123"
2. In your email client software, under Outgoing mail, set the SMTP server to smtp.gmail.com.
3. Tick "My outgoing server requires authentication" and set the username to [email protected] and password to password123.
4. Also select to use "TLS" secure connection.
5. In your Gmail account, go to Settinsg > Accounts and Imports
6. Click "Send mail from another address" and fill in the settings for your core email address
7. Once that's done, go back to Settings > Accounts and Imports and click "Make Default" next to your core email address.
8. Make sure you've also set your reply to address to your core email address.

Voila, you can now send email from your core email address using Outlook/Thunderbird via Gmail!

The only draw back is that when someone receives an email, it will say "From John Smith [[email protected]]; on behalf of; John Smith [[email protected]]". However, the reply-to address will be your core one, as long as you've set it up properly.

Not the neatest solution, but it'll do until I can find a better one..or a new ISP!

It's Namesco (names.co.uk).

Why, do you know of a better solution? smile

In general yes.

Most email hosts offer other SMTP ports as well as the standard port 25. 1 & 1 offers one, Purple Cloud offers two. Namesco appears not to do so.

See this FAQ, the Authenticated SMTP paragraph.
