YouFibre - New install

Hi All,
Just wanted to announce that I have ordered a YouFibre 1GBps up and down with a Static IP service being installed at the end of the month, you might be saying, why are you telling us, well simply I will update you through the stages and process as there isn't much about YouFibre out there.

I want to add that I will be using an Omada ER7206 V1 router (Connected to an Omada Software controller) and will advise of the configuration that goes along with this. (Although this is similar on most)

It is my understanding that there is MAC address binding on the YouFibre network meaning you have to spoof the MAC address of the router they give you (An Eero or Eero Pro).

I will of course report on this, the reliability, latency, consistently of service, speed etc.


The initial order was simple and all the details for the whole process are emailed to you, and the online FAQ on their website is extremely useful and provides the majority of questions you can think of.

I probably should add that the install is on the 26-09-2023 in the morning.
Apparently one 2 hour appointment is required to do a cable pull, termination, fitting ONT and router.

I went with you fibre in may. It wasn't the best of starts tbh and I still have some issues at the moment.
Originally I had a faulty splice from day one - symptoms were identifiable by inconsistent upload speeds bottoming out at around 200mb & generally be all over the shop. Took about a month to resolve as they tried numerous things before finally sending an netomnia engineer who re-spliced the connection. This resolved that upload issue. I would suggest you test with your own kit hard wired on the day both up and down before the engineer leaves. The engineer has no way of testing speeds apart from a wifi test via a phone... Of course I didnt install my own kit over on to the netomnia ont until later and then the problems started.
You will need to spoof the mac address of whatever router they supply as they have a couple of types avilable. DHCP is all you need on the wan port. I use my own opnsense router. I also opted for the static V4 address at an extra £5pcm as lots of gaming going on here.

Things settled down after this but over the last 4-6 weeks I have been having issues with latency/backhaul routing. Initially I was at 6.5ms for latency, this then rose to 7.5, then 10.5 and now its up around 20ms... I have had numerous conversations with you fibre who say it will get resolved as its a netomnia issue but its been going on a while. No match for my old zen FTTP which has a 5.5ms latency.

Yes its great having symmetrical but I just hope the increased latency is resolved but the longer it goes on I am not convinced it will get back to around 7ms

Thanks for confirming the MAC Address spoofing, in regards to the issues, please contact Jeremy who will be able to help, I have had numerous conversations and he has been able to advise me each time, I'm sure he will be able to advise and see what can be done around this issue.

I have just found you in the system and I will get the DIrector of Networks to look at it on Monday.

Ugh looks similar to my latency from Derry N.Ireland, was hoping youfibre would be lower latency but doesn't look like it would be.

To be completely honest, stability is a big + for most, and myself too, I also strongly believe that the benefits of the price point and speed of the service outweighs latency within reason. I also believe that the latency shown is still very low compared to some networks.

I can think of a few networks even leased lines that are higher.

I know I have lived next to a datacenter and managed to get under 3MS even as low as 1MS consistently, but its obviously rare, the UK doesn't have datacentres everywhere and even if it did ISP routing would be even more complex with the amount of routing connections etc required and headend exchange / physical fibre locations and equipment etc.

Hey. I can't add much more than what we have already discussed over email but I will go over it again here again for clarities sake.

The latency on the Netomnia (the access network) piece of the network is 1-2ms. That will be comparable / better than your FTTC latency with Zen. You are measuring latency from your home to Thinkbroadband. Thinkbroadbands network sits behind/within NetConnex (https://www.peeringdb.com/net/580) who are only available in Telehouse datacentre in London. We are present at Linx London, Wales, Scotland and Manchester and Linx London is the only place we receive advertisements for NetConnex. I stand to be corrected on any part of that, but it's what I can see based on BGP advertisements for the prefixes I see probes going to on those latency graphs of yours. So using Thinkbroadband alone to say whether our network has good or bad latency compared to another is in some ways misleading, you're purely judging the latency to Netconnexs network in Telehouse London.

However I appreciate this is an important destination for you, and indeed London is obviously going to be an important route for a lot of internet traffic in the UK. From your area of our network we use a backhaul provider to get back to London. That backhaul provider uses a ring on their network. Traffic can go across that ring either way depending on various factors. One of the paths goes via Wales and back to London, the other is much more direct. After a network failure on the backhaul providers network they started, and have continued to, route the backhaul via Wales rather than direct hence the higher latency you're seeing. We're discussing moving it back to the more direct route, and nailing the path down. That will be completed in the next 3-4 weeks I believe, but it's relatively complex for them to achieve, and requires a maintenance window. Nailing the path down has serious implications as redundancy is removed from that backhaul. To combat that we are also building in our own backhaul back to Bristol and onwards to our Wales datacentre where, as I mentioned earlier, we also breakout to the internet. So staging this change alongside that work is important to ensure continuity of service for yourself and others.

I hope that answers your query, and as I mentioned to you directly we are working on this but it's not simple and will potentially not be quick. ISP networks evolve as time goes on, I firmly believe it's important we provide stability and speed to our customer base and it's what we are always working to achieve and improve. That graph of yours will improve.
